How safe is 33099???

Speaking of a hardware routers (like my netgear and port forwarding...

If I open up 33099 on my router to get to to my internal machine, who's to say every joe schmoe wanna be hacker is not going to port scan my router and attempt to hack 33099 for vulnerabilities to placeshifter?

Thoughts or specifics?

I can limit what service that are available port forwarding. What service does placeshifter use (Http, ftp, AIM, etc.)?

Thanks,
Jeff

You could use that argument for any port you decide to open on your router. I've had that port open since the placeshifter first existed and no suspicious activity so far.

BTW: according to the firewall FAQ, you'll have better luck opening 31099 for TCP, unless you do some properties file customization. Or, you could use UPnP to forward some other external port to the actual internal port. Some routers can use different external & internal ports with a manual config too.

Jeff,

Placeshifter is the service. I never checked, but I assume it uses TCP only for transport. Your question should be around the likeliness that SageTV can be taken advantage of and thus causing havoc with rest of host it is running on. I have had mine on from the beginning of PS, too, and no issues.
