Using a game console system with SageTV?
I would like to hook up a new Playstation I got to my TV but I am having trouble figuring out how to do it since this TV is hooked up to my HTPC. There are no direct connections to the TV, it can only be accessed via the HTPC. When I used SageTV to create a new video source for the Composite inputs I used with the Playstation, I am getting a long delay between pressing something on the controller and the screen responding. I figured it was just because SageTV was recording everything so it was causing a delay but even when I ran the WinTV Application to go directly to the source I am still getting an annoying delay.
How do I get rid of this delay so I can have instant reaction on screen? |

The reason for this is because most tuner cards used with Sage is hardware encoders. This means that the tuners records the incoming video, converts it to mpeg and then writes it to disk. Only then is it available to the PC for display.
I still use my AIW 9800 pro when I want to capture or just play games and it has no delay. It is not a hardware encoder, instead it encodes using software so the PC recieves the signal directly as analog just like a Standard TV does. Unfortunately, that means running another software like the included MMC from ATI.

I'd suggest looking about for a multi input switcher thingo with remote control or hooking it into a different input on your tv, or hooking it into a different input on your amplifier if you have one that switches video.

Ah, I see... well I guess I'm out of luck then.
What about video cards which support TV in/out ? Do they behave the same way as those tv tuner cards and have the delay? Or is it at all possible to configure it so it does not use hardware encoding? I always thought hardware encoding would be much faster than software encoding... |
