How-to: Disable new menus in Sage 6 for recordings in folders
Can I disable the new pop-up menu(s) which add button pushes when merely wishing to play a TV recording within a folder? For example, Sage 6 added a menu for Options For Recordings within the chosen folder. Don't want that extra step.
Sage 6 is now FIVE button pushes from the main menu to playback of a simple TV recording. WAF = -1 versus sage 5's UI |

Did you try pressing PLAY?

or disable Advanced options in that popup and it does not show for folders. (see the manual)

pressing PLAY is N/A. Because in V6, when you click on a folder, next comes a menu of options of things to do to the recordings in that folder, before you get a chance to choose a given recording.
Nielm's response in this thread says there's a user choice to disable the options. I will look again to find that disable choice. Thank you. |

You can also use the hidden features to use malore's menus. They have a Smart Select setting, so you click on the program and it thinks you want to play it.
The trade-off is you lose ease of access to some advanced options (like Convert). |

Actually, that would be Right or Info. Everything mentioned here is described in the manual on p. 33 for v6.1.

I'm not a big fan of this new feature, either. See my thread on this here (http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=21688) It's understood that I can press RIGHT to move into the folder and skip the popup. But thanks to the IPOD, my instinct is to "click to select", not to push right. This is the way I have always used Sage (click to select).
FYI, you can "disable" the popup by turning off the "Advanced Options" on the popup menu for a recording (such that only the "Basic Options" are displayed). I am sure this is all covered in the manual (as Opus points out). Just my 2 cents... |

My opening question here was - How to suppress the new pop-up of options when you choose a folder containing multiple recordings. To reduce the number of steps. I'm told that there is a way to do so, and I will RTFM and browse the menus and find it! The 6.1 manual, lower part of P33, says, "Use the OPTIONS command to view the options menu." In my case, the options menu displays automatically (I did not request it) when a recordings folder is selected. So I'll figure out how to disable that. |

You are making this appear more difficult than it is, potentially confusing anyone else reading this topic.
If you really need the exact words to read in the manul, see the three paragraphs in the section titled Selecting a Group of Recordings, in bold type right in the middle of p. 33 of the v6.1 manual. The section above it applies to individual recording entries, while the section below it applies to the use of the Options command to get to the options dialog for changing options for that menu; neither of which have a lot to do with what you are asking. In short: if you want to skip any options dialog for a group of recordings (or even a single recording), simply use the Right arrow or the Info command as short cuts. These types of shortcuts are used throught the UI. - Andy

Works for me. Play plays the first recording in the folder. Right then play plays whichever I choose...

You guys may continue to discuss whether it's play or right arrow or info, and how many more button pushes are required to play a recording. re new pop-ups: I complain to my spouse that she resists changes in the use of gadgets that are hard to memorize and plentiful - and I guess I too have that trait. No more button pushes, find the recording and play it - it's very simple. You just need to use the correct keys!

stevech: I know you've already deleted the post where you roll your eyes at my suggestion of what section to read in the manual, but yes, that is the section I believe you should read, since that is what you asked about & what everyone has been replying about. I clarified what section you should read because you started referring to the wrong part of the page. So, if that isn't what you asked about, then no wonder you get so confused, because you don't even know what you are asking. If you find grouped recordings too much to handle, then you can use the Options command and choose No Grouping as the "Group by" method. - Andy

The problem is that the "correct" keys changed between the previous and most recent versions

The key presses to turn on the "Basic Options" would be: 1. Enter Sage Recordings menu 2. Enter any Recordings Folder 3. Select any Recording 4. In the dialog box that appears, make sure you are viewing only the Basic Options (selecting the Advanced Options button displays a two column dialog with extra features like Add to playlist, Set Watched, Convert, etc). If the Advanced Options are displayed, select the Basic Options button to revert to the single column view. Select Close to dismiss the dialog. 5. Assuming you are showing the Basic Options dialog, then you should no longer see the extra popup when selecting a Recording folder This is what neilm said in post 3 and what I said in post 7, but maybe it wasn't clear what was meant by "turn off Advanced Options" Hope this helps |

If the Airing and Video Options Dialog is in Advanced mode, then after highlighting a group of recordings, you may use the Select command or left-click on it to view the list of possible actions to perform for the entire group of recordings; see the Grouped Airings and Videos Options Dialog for details. |

If you want to play semantics games, then I guess you are right.
I'll revise my original statement... I should say that I like the new feature, I just don't like how it is enabled/disabled. It's not intuitive that changing the Basic/Advanced options of the Airing Options Dialog will also alter the behavior of the Grouped Airings Options Dialog. I like to use the Advanced Airing Options dialog along, but would rather have the Basic Grouped Airing Options dialog. Unfortunately, there is no way to use both of these at the same time (and still use SELECT to navigate through folders). |
