Beware Security 'Update' KB925902 (mostly me)
I was being a good little M$ drone and loaded the update last night. I've been fighting with my system ever since. Several programs are now listed twice or more in Task Manager that shouldn't be; my USB2 is failing to start; it hosed up my anti-virus; I have to end-process Firefox on reboot; who knows what else. I'm going to try rolling back to the previous night's differential of the OS drive and see what happens. Man what a headache. Thank you Bill Gates.
Edit: looks like I jumped the gun on this one.

Interesting, the only thing MS said it borks is the realtek HD software. Do you have one of those?

Ah, thanks dude, wondering what that DLL error was...I'll have to go get that file again, since I just deleted it.

Guess it's about time the 'My system is in the minority" bug bit me. Edit: OK, looks like it was something that happened since the last reboot. I can root out the extra entries in TM, but I think I'll leave explorer.exe's double alone for now.

I'm going to hijack my own thread...
anyone have thoughts on what would be causing explorer.exe, em_exec.exe, ultravnc, deskmenu.exe, raid_tool.exe, and 3 or 4 other apps to show up twice in task manager when I reboot? Firefox also loads on boot and I have to end task it before I can open the browser. I've never seen this happen to one of my builds in my 10yrs of working on PCs. It seems that the instance using the lesser memory is the erroneous dupe. TIA

I got the DLL error after this update and the hotfix corrected that but I never saw any of the duplicate listings in TM. It sounds like maybe thats a different issue but I have no idea what it could be.

Yeah, it's a separate issue. I rolled back the install with a differential backup to the previous day and the duplicates were still there. Something happened since my last reboot a couple of weeks ago. Figured I'd throw the question out anyhow in case someone here has seen it before.

This thread can be deleted whenever. Last reboot for the Acronis stuff posted elsewhere on the board somehow fixed the 'issue.' No more extraneous duplicate program entries in task manager. wish I knew what happened, but oh well. it's working so no complaints. We'll see what happens when I re-apply the update this weekend. *crossed fingers*
