Frequent BSOD while watching recordings

My system is giving me a heck of a time. While watching recorded OTA HD (MPG2), the screen will lock up, and then the computer will bluescreen. (Actually it reboots, but I have error logging turned on so I get a minidump.)

The errors I get are DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) and KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e). SageTV.exe, my tuner card drivers, and the Nvidia driver are all implicated depending on the time of day and phase of moon. I also see the xvid decoder barf sometimes when watching an xvid/divx AVI file in Sage.

This started happening with Sage 6 and flattening the computer and reinstalling a minimal set of software didn't help. (I have the nvidia mpg2 decoder loaded, as the Sage-provided decoder looks crummy on a big TV.)

Swapping RAM/CPU didn't help.

Only SageTV has problems, I never see the computer wig out when using another media program.

The system is a MSI K8N motherboard + a Fusion 5 Lite PCI tuner card. Oh, and a USBUIRT. That's it.

Any ideas? I am about at wits' end.

What driver version for the Fusion5 Lite are you using? I have a 5 lite and 5 gold rt using 3.6

The other thing is that I extract the drivers from the installer and don't let it install its software.

I am using the latest, 3.60.01, though I have also tried older versions with no difference.

I turn off all the auto-run Fusion stuff after install but I haven't gone so far as to dig out the driver files alone.

Computers, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em...

I had almost identical problems recently. The system would spontaneously reboot during playback almost daily. When I checked the windows logs, it showed a stop error. A little deeper digging showed that the error was something like a thread hang detected in the video driver. I went around for a while changing drivers (ended up with forceware 84.21) and reloading my decoder (purevideo). I still had the reboot problem. I then tried changing my playback settings and found the the reboots only occured when using overlay. I switched to VMR9 and have not had another spontaneous reboot in over a month. I really don't know what the source of the problem is, but I'm happy to have found a work-around. I don't recall ever having the problem before SageTV v6, but I had chalked it up to coincidence.

I am running SageTV v6.0.18, purevideo decoder (.223), and Forceware drivers v84.21 on a client with an Athlon64 X2 4400+, 1Gb ram, and a 6600GT video card.

I have no idea if this is related to your problem, but I thought I'd better mention it since it seems similar.

Aloha,
Mike

Thanks for the lead, Mike. I'll give that a try but I'm afraid I'll have to throw money at the system... the built-in GF6150 can't handle hi def VMR9 and most of what I use my system for is time shifting OTA HD.

Well, I wanted a new 3d card for big screen gaming anyway.

Glad to know I am not the only one who has had a problem.
