Questions before jump

I have a couple of questions for the Linux experts. I’ve tried to look up some of these but did not find any info.

1. I presently have a windows sage server with mapped drives as storage for DVD’s, pictures, and music on other computers on the network. Does Linux allow you to map these same drives so that clients will be able to play the DVD’s?

2. Would I be able to keep my present recordings? These are on 2 sATA drives. I also have 4 other hare drives in the system. Are there limits to how many drive Linux will recognize.

3. Will other computers on the network be able to recognize the drives on the Linux server and access the files for editing and burning?

4. Is the eHome wonder supported under Linux.

Thanks

1. Yes.

2. Yes you can keep them. There is no other limit than what the hardware can do.

3. You can share partitions by modifying the samba configuration. By default your tv, music and video directories are shared.

4. No, at least as far as I know

There aren't drive letters in linux. Everything is mounted to an empty directory. I can envision two potential pitfalls.

1) Your current recording won't carry over as recordings but as imported videos because the path won't be the same.

2) Your current drives are likely NTFS, unless you install CaptiveNTFS for writing or something like it, you'll have to move the files off and reformat. Which you'll want to do anyway.

When you move recordings they don't need to be in the same folder. They just need to be in one of Sage's recording folders and have the correct name that's stored in Wiz.bin (at least the Id part IIRC).
