Domain Hosting on the Cheap / Online Video Storage (private) Free?

Looking for a good domain hosting plan. I'd like to come down to paying only $4.95 a month or less. Here is what I get currently, for $9.95 a month.

100GB Storage
750GB / Month Bandwidth

I'm not sure I really need that much of either of those, but I'd at least like to get half of that.

Anyone got any good places?

Also, while on this subject, the main reason for this, is to store home videos on, to provide links to family members so that they can download the files. Is there a private storage for videos, similar to YouTube or Google Video, but that allows you to keep your videos private? Is there size/bandwidth limitations?

There's so much out there, it's hard to sort through all the junk, and find what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Hi Jason,

I'd look at the 1&1 Home plan :
  • 2 free domain names
  • 120 GB web space
  • 1,200 GB traffic
for $4.99 a month. I'm with 1&1 for more than 3 years now, and am very satisfied.

Check out AOL's UnCut Video. As far as I know there isn't a storage limitation and it allows for private videos. http://uncutvideo.aol.com

B

EDIT: It does look like videos can't be longer than 10 minutes.

LOL, thank you. I remember talking about it at one point, so I did a search for Netfirms, and found your information about 1&1. I've been reading it, and it looks great.

I think I may have screwed up though, I was just checking on the transfer of domain names, and I think it actually did the transfer, before I have paid for anything??? It said:

Transfer successfully initialised.
Further details will follow by e-mail.
They don't even have my e-mail address yet?!

Oh, so you actually initiated the domain transfer on the 1&1 web site ? Well, I would assume that your email address is on file with the current registrar, and they would get this info... Just drop an email to 1&1 support to check on this, they are usually pretty quick

Thanks, I just sent them an e-mail. My contract with netfirms isn't up for another month and 10 days, so I'll probably wait about another month.

Are you able to use Filezilla to upload files?

Do you happen to know if two people could share the same site, but have different user id's and passwords when uploading files? (Maybe using the two different domains?)

My brother-in-law and I were thinking of going in together, but it would be nice to not be able to delete each other's files...

Well, you can set up 2 different FTP accounts (you have 10 available) and assign distinct root directories for each account. That way one account doesnt see (and can't modify) the files of the other. I think you can also set up some kind of 'protected directories', but I haven't played around with this yet.

Edit: of course you could also use the second domain for achieving the same thing, but this would certainly be overkill.

Actually, using the second domain wouldn't bother me at all, and would probably be a good way to keep our stuff apart.

I'll have to give it a shot.

Thanks for the assistance, Dirk.

Just FYI, google video does allow private storage -- at least, kind of... It's not password protected: you just have to know the URL to the video to play it, and the video is not listed in any search results...

This may be 'good enough' for what you need
