Movie Listings and Trailers Coming Soon...

Just a heads up that I am working on putting together an STVI to allow viewing theater listings, info about particular movies, including trailers (NOTE THAT TRAILER SUPPORT IS VERY IFFY AT THIS POINT GIVEN THE LIMITED SUPPORT IN SAGE FOR QUICKTIME .MOV FORMAT). I'm in touch with the guy that wrote the Meedio Movie Showtimes plug-in. All I have to do is to put together some Sage screens that will allow you to do settings for it (like telling it your Zip code, theaters you are interested in, etc.) and it should start working for us.

Given that the Meedio program supports different countries, this one will likely support that as well...

Anyhow, I know that at this point, it is vaporware, but it is on its way...

I may need to beg help from some of the STV gurus here to help me putting the screens and navigation together, so if they'd be willing to help out, that would be great.

Take care, and I'll try to get some preliminary screenshots up this weekend. Note that it may take a month or more to get this all together. I'll plan to put it out for beta testing once I feel there is something good enough to test.

I did some quick checking, and the base program has the following to say about the countries it supports, which hopefully means that this will support those countries as well...

Quote:
Currently supports Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, UK, and the US.
I'll keep you all updated as I find more information...

Here are some preliminary screenshots. Keep in mind that this is all static data, there's not an actual program driving any of it at this point, but I thought you might like to see what I have in mind...

When you go into the movie showtimes menu, you'd see something like the what is in MainMenu.jpg.

If you select "Search By Movie", you'd see something like what's in Movies.jpg.

If you select "Search By Theater", you'd see something like what's in Theaters.jpg. Selecting a theater from that screen would show you a list of movies like above, but specifically limited to that theater.

Once you select a movie, you'd be presented with a screen similar to Nielm's IMDB Movie display screen. See MovieDetails.jpg.

Again, the real details of what will show on these screens is still to be determined, and to start with I'll probably just get some very basic functionality in there (configure the download program options, and try and parse the XML data that holds the movie details and display it). Once that is in place, I can start tweaking things so that it all works together better.

Take care, and I'll post something as soon as I can get it running.

Note that this is my first STVi, so getting it all working at all is going to be quite a feat... Wish me luck!

Well, about a week into it... I have the main screen working, and pulling in the config data. I'm about halfway through getting the config settings screens done.

I'll keep you all apprised of my progress as I go.

I'd ve very interested in seeing this plugin go live. I really liked the movie times plugin for Meedio, and miss having that functionality available. Keep up the good work.

Okay, so the configuration screens are pretty much done. I'm sure there will be more tweaking as I go, but all of the items in the configuration file can be edited and the file gets saved as you go, so that when the actual program runs to download the information.

Next steps:

1. Write the Java code to parse the movie data produced by the program
2. Create the screens to display/navigate that information
3. Not sure exactly how I'll pull this one off: Pull out the stuff into an STVI and release an alpha version (very doubtful if I'll get any sort of trailer playback support in this version).

Note that I am also waiting on a newer version of the actual program that goes and pulls the data, although I think I'll get that before I actually get my alpha version ready. The configuration format may change a bit, so I'll probably have to tweak the configuration screens to make them compatible.

Thanks for all the encouragement folks, I hope to have something for you soon...

I'll keep you all posted.

Quick update - Just got a new version of the download program which changed things so that multiple countries can be contained in a given configuration. As you might imagine, this complicates my configuration screens somewhat, so I'm back digging in there. Hopefully won't delay the initial release much.

As always, I'll keep you all up to date with my progress...

Update:

Unfortunately, not too much to report over the last week. My "real job" got busy, and had several things to take care of at home, so didn't make too much progress.

I have rewritten the config Java code, adding new processing for the new locations file and handling the queries for the movie data itself. I've got Sage talking with both the config and locations files, but still have some screen changes to make before it is all done. No progress was made on the movie data side of things.

So, I did make some progress, just not what I was hoping.

Anyhow, I should be able to get more time to work on it this week, so I should make more progress by the next status update. My goals for this week are to get the config screens completed working with the new config/locations formats, and to at least get started on the screens to pull the actual movie data.

Take care all, as always I'll keep you posted!
