Does Sage work with Server 2003?
Does SageTV work OK with Windows Server 2003?
Any problems? I assume you must run sage as a service? |

There's lots of info here. Try searching for 'windows 2003'.
Here is the most recent thread I could find: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...t=windows+2003 |

Does anybody with Sage running on 2003 server have clients in a domain setting?
I am still waiting for some hardware to setup my new Sage server. The main reason for this is to limit what my kids watch and when. I want to setup profiles for them not to be able to logon at certain times and setup permissions in certain folders. How does Sage work in this type of envirorment? What happens if my son tries to access a folder he does not have permissions to? Does Sage crash?

Ok, I guess no one has tried this setup yet.
Let me be the first. One question for those who do have Sage on 2003. I am at a crossroad where I can either rip my Sage Server machine apart and put in the new hardware and reinstall everything (Current M/B and other components not 2003 compatible) and hope it works and take old parts to build a XP Pro client, or build a Sageclient pc with new parts and install 2003 on the client. I really have reservations about tearing the Sage Server apart as it runs like clockwork. On the other hand, if I build the new machine as the 2003 DC I would have two PCs that would have to run 24/7... Any other (Dis)advantages I might be missing? Old parts Asus P4C800E-Del Ati AIW 9700 Pro P4 3.0 Socket 478 with HT 2x512 Cosair DDR433 XMS 2x120 Sata I raid-0 onboard raid (OS drive) 2x400GB IDE /133 single drives for storage 4x400GB Sata Seagate on 3Ware 9500s-8 Sony 530 & 710 dvd-rw drives New parts Asus A8N-E ATI X1600 Pro AMD 4600+ Dual Core 2x1GB Cosair XMS DDR400 2x160 Sata II Everything else I'd take from old system

Your logon time stuff would work just fine tho (if they can't log in, they can't use Sage ). I run my Sage server & clients on XP Pro, all connected to a 2k3 DC (running SBS 2k3 actually, I use Exchange at home). Haven't had any problems with it running on the domain at all.

And this is whether or not Sage Server is the same machine as 2003 or not?

As far as Server 2k3 is concerned, ALL the sagetv stuff you watch is provided with whatever permissions the server application is running with on the main server. It's al piped out to the clients via non-standard ports. (thats why you don't need UNC or mapped drives to watch videos on clients, only need that for comskip apps).

So that means that if I installed Sage under one user credential then the client will only show video under the same user credentials?

Whatever user the Sage Server software (or service, if in service mode) is running under is the user context that all clients will get.
The Sage server "serves" the clients - they send requests, it opens the files and sends the data back. On the server computer, only one user is accessing the data. It doesn't matter what user your clients are logged in as. The only possible exception I am aware of is when you use an external player (using a custom STV) - I _believe_ that the external player accesses the file(s) directly, requiring the client to be in an authorized user context. |

ok I think I've got it now.
What I will do is use external player for ALL file types and use custom menu to rid my son's client of LiveTV and Guides so that he only sees imports. This will work for my purpose. Thanx guys...

One other exception: Comskip (and any other plugin/STV that references external files). Basically, anything that hits a file directly (such as the comskip text files), rather than asking the server to send it a media stream, will require the client user to have rights to the share.

So Sage does not honor Active Directory or Share permissions but some parts of custom STV's do?
Is there a way with Studio to create a plug-in that would read the permissions and check it against the SageClient user?

The networking in Sage does not support AD or share permissions. None of the plugins/STV's do either. To use say, a comskip stv import, the client PC has to have access to those files directly (and at the same location as the server). That would be as far as the permissions go, and that's controlled by Windows, not Sage.

So is there a way using a custom STV to get around it? I know I can use an external player and with the %1 parameter it fetches the file and plays it. Does this indeed fetch the file outside of Sage?
Clarification: Say I have a share on PC 1 which does not have any Sage software. On that share I have South Park the movie. PC 2 is the Sage Server and has the share as an Video Import directory. Now I have Client on PC 3 and I'm logged in as someone who DOES NOT have permission to view share on PC 1. Using the external player function of a custom STV, does it fetch the file directly or does it still have to send the file from PC 1(Share) to PC 2(Server) to PC 3 (Client)? If it does not send through the server then permissions should work. But can I view recordings as they are recording with an external player? Thanks for all the help so far... I am starting to realize I'm being a bit of a pest, but I can't believe that others do not have more concerns about parental control over Imports.

Does Sage work with Server 2003?
I THINK that once you are using an external player, it will bypass sage, so it would go by NFS share name I believe. You could try this with VLC player, since that is free...
