Multiple Speed FF and RW?

Does Sage allow you to watch sped up TV or slowed down TV? Currently my FF and REW buttons 'skip' but don't really show me faster or slower video content..

Thanks!

There is no true fast forward or rewind in sage...

Nielm has a plugin that does a good job of faking it though. But I haven't been able to get it to work since I switched to any decoder other than the sage default mpeg decoder. So good luck.

Wow.. that is surprising.. don't some of the 'other' PVR packages do so? I thought I read that BeyondTV does this..

Is this simply something that has never been coded, or something that is technically not possible due to the hardware and such that Sage employs?

I don't believe it's not possible... only that sage never did it. There's a smooth ff and rw in the "commands" but I think it's for dvd's only. There's some glaring omissions in sage, but overall it's still the best of the bunch currently.

I know a lot of people would like this as an OPTION.

Personally I have no need at all for 'real time' FFWD and RWD. In fact, I hate it. It is much slower (for me) than the skipping is. So for my uses I see it as a feature, not a glaring omission.

BUT, everyone has their own preferences. And I know Frey has heard this feature request loud and clear. It has just never made the list of things to do/work on. Probably because adding new hardware support and completely new features drives sales more than smooth FFWD versus skipping...

Multi speed FF/RW works in the Linux version (MediaREADY 5000). Interestingly enough even after I put Sage.jar and the default Sage 4 STV onto the MR 5k (So I could run it as a Sage Client to my Windows Sage Server) multi speed FF/RW still worked on the MR 5k.

Well, then lets hope it magically appears in a 4.01 release

Of course it may be tied to some hardware issue that Sage has a handle on in the MR 5k.. or not..

Still... I'd love to see it/use it.. if at all possible...

In the meantime, I'll try the plugin..

It seems like the MediaREADY 5000 can do a lot more than the Window version. It supports digital cable QAM and smooth FF/REW. Is there anything else the MediaREADY 5000 does that the Windows version cant?

I believe Linux allows much greater control over the decoders than Window's DirectShow, which is why it is possible on the MR5k, and difficult on Windows.

Yet another reason that it would be great for SageTV to release the linux version to us non-oem folk!

Huh? supports QAM? Where have you seen this? Only QAM capable stuff I'd seen so far was on HDTV/Analog combo cards (Fusion, etc) and last I saw the MR 5k didn't do HDTV cards.

You know I moved to sage from a long time user of Tivo. And must say when I first switched to SageTV the biggest feature missing was smooth FF. Well after using SageTV for over a year, I do not miss smooth FF at all, and would be very upset if I did not have my skip FF.

I'm still using my ReplayTV's a lot. If SageTV had the skip FF capabilities of the ReplayTV I'd probably retire them tomorrow. With my ReplayTV 5500's you have a 30 second quick-skip, a "show-Nav" i.e. 1 button com-skip. Sage can do those, however it can't do:

ReplayTV hit 'x' and quick-skip to jump 'x' minutes ahead, or 'x' instant replay to go back 'x' minutes.
Or hit 'x' Jump to jump to that point in the program, i.e. 20 jump and you go to the 20 minute point in the recording.

I use all of those a LOT and miss them whenever I'm using Sage. I guess that's my #1 feature request for SageTV or an STVi for an eager Studio whiz.

I may not fully understand what you are saying but it sounds like Sage does most of that already. Have you checked into the FF2/REW2 and Timeshift functions?

You may want to look at setting up the timescroll command on your remote. Press a button and now press skip to move as many minutes as you want. Press time scroll again and it starts playing. And as mlbdude mentioned look at setting up ff2/rw2.

I do have ff2/rw2 set up. I've got ff set to 30 seconds and rw set to 10 seconds (to "hunt" when I get close) and ff2 and rw2 both set to 3 minutes.

I haven't tried time scroll because until I got the MediaREADY 5000 I was using the MVP for viewing in the bedroom and don't have any free buttons on the remote to set it up.

Sage can do some of it, but just doesn't have the flexibility of being able to ff/rw any amount simply by pressing that amount in and hitting ff/rw. Nor can it give you the ability to directly access any point in the program.

On the MR 5k I can get very close by calling up the OSD and using the trackball to select the point in the timeline I want. It's not exact though, since I'm guessing at the point I hit ("that looks like it should be about 22 minutes into the program")

It's not going to stop me from using Sage and I will look into setting up a remote command, but don't see it happening easily. I know I don't have any buttons on the MVP remote (original MVP remote), and I'm not sure if I have any I could "re-task" on the MR 5k remote.

I would look into Timescroll. While not exactly what you want, it will let you jump forward or back to any location in the file with your remote.

Just not sure which buttons to "lose" on the original MVP remote and/or the MediaREADY 5000 remote. I know I'm using them all on the MVP remote and truly haven't played with the MR 5k remote enough to know what I want. Pluse with the MR 5k I can just click the trackball and jump anywhere in the timeline already.
