Under the Weather??

Anyone know why all of a sudden ...

My 2.0.20 client which points to www.weather.com fails

Error = Location: Failed to read weather source

and

My new 2.2.8 server which points to www.weatherroom.com fails,

Error = failed to run weather retrievers
c:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\STVs\OriginalV2\weather\GetWeatherJava.exe

BTW ... GetWeatherJava.exe is in this location

but

My 2.0.20 server which points to www.weather.com works???

Also, WRS works fine on both the 2.0.20 client and the new 2.2.8 server.

Strange????

Thanks, T.

Weatherroom.com stopped providing their xml weather service (a long time ago, actually). There is no way to make GetWeatherJava.exe work, so the "Local Weather" plugin is essentially dead until someone rewrites it to use a different source. Considering how well salsbt's WRS plugin works, I doubt if any other weather plugin is too likely to be updated. WRS can be customized to pull any information from a wide variety of sources and display it in various ways. I have mine set up to not only display the local and national weather information from a combination of weather.com and accuweather.com, but also pull traffic information and even live traffic camera captures from MN/DOT's website.

I never had Sage 2.0.x, so I can't comment on that version. I've had WRS working on both 2.2.8 and 3.0-beta11.

Make sure you upgrade to the GetWeather that supports Weather.com. It comes with SageMC but is available somewhere on the forums. It was posted about a year ago.

... and then, of course, there is a weather feature built into v3. (Yes, I realize the original question was about v2.)

It isn't as full-featured as WRS, but it covers the basics & is pretty simple to configure.

Thanks everyone ...

Yea, I figured as much ... I thought there would be a workaround since 2.2.8 has been around for a while.

I am just upgrading to it now because I started gathering my new server components way back in January. Of course then the talk of 3.0 came out I decided to hold on the build for its arrival. When 3.0 began beta testing in the beginning of the summer I thought it wouldn't be long. By the end of the summer it was still in beta and not being given a target release date I just gave up on waiting since my components were now aging and their losing value. Of course once I installed 2.2.8, 3.0 went in to Release Candidate! But, I still have no idea when it will be officially released or when all the custom add-ons will be available.

I am in the last leg of customizing now; using 2.2.8 with Cayars STV, got my dynamic menus happening, fonts & background all setup the way I like. I Installed Nielm's RSS and IMDB as well as Salsbst WRS with Traffic. Am now fooling with Remote Controls. After that it's the VFD plug-in and the hopefully the Weather fix. Then I will replace my old “noisy” server with this “virtually silent” one. I do want to try Nielm's Multi-Speed RW/FF and Webserver along with the best Comskip I can find too.

I will try and search for the Weather.com GetWeather. If anyone has a link to it I'd appreciate it. BTW, I like having both basic Weatehr and WRS because the fam likes simple and of course I want everything ...

Thanks again ... T.

With neilm's menus, I use both WRS and stock Sage in a "Weather" sub-menu...best of both worlds (WRS's Radar Images).

I am using Nielm's Dynamic Menus with Cayar's Ultimate STV, but the basic Weatherroom Weather that came with the STV failed as mentioned in the first post.

Apparently Weatherrrom ditched this support. So, I am trying to find the way to import the Weather.com plug-in for this STV.

Thanks, T.

(Im hoping to get Cayars stv installed soon, if all goes well) Are you saying that the weather module in it, no longer works?

If thats the case, then after I get Cayars installed, can I just import the WRS weather module on top of Cayars? not sure what the exact process to follow for this kind of an upgrade/install

Thanks

Yes, that is what I am saying ...

The basic Weather that is part of the Cayars STV using Weatherrrom.com. I am told they no longer provide support.

I am told there is a way to add the basic Weather that is fed from Weather.com, but I have to search the forum to find out how to do that.

However, WRS works great. I have it setup in Cayars STV. I have modified it to add a Traffic Map and renamed and mover WRS buttons around. So, it works great as always. The only issue I have with WRS in Cayars STV is the button font test resizes itself when I renamed them thus gets smaller rather then just wrapping. This didn't happen with Nielm's STV and WRS.

I only want the basic Weather for my family ... I like WRS myself.

Hope that helps ... T.

I am not sure what all that means yet, but I suppose once I get it installed, will make more sense

BTW, how long do you think it should take to install Cayars STV? Just the core parts of it, not necessarily everything (like not the commercial skipping stuff - I can save that for later)

What does this effect, not sure I understand implications.

Thanks! PS I would like basic weather and WRS too same reasons.

Hmm ... Good question ... Long story ...

I have been building this new box for a few weeks now ... After installing Sage 2.2.8 Server, I tried just importing all the Nielm Plug-in's, but I wanted more of what I had in his old STV with my old Sage 2.0.20 Server. So, I then tried the SageMC STV, and got some things I wanted, but lost others. I then decided to take the plunge and try Cayars. I will say, it does have just about everything in it. The downside is Cayars, the developer of the STV got hit by a car crossing the street and was pretty badly hurt, so there has been very limited support for his STV since March.

As for time … I have been messing around with Cayars every few nights for about a week or two. But, you have to consider that I like to tweak it just the way I like it so when I set it up in my family room entertainment center the fam doesn't get all worked up about a half baked PVR. I'd say you can install the generic STV in one night. The time will be customizing things like menus, fonts, font sizes, imports / plug-ins like WRS, etc just the way you like them. But that is definitely worth the time to me.

As for WRS ... What I meant was that if you want to spend a little time, you can customize it to not only give you Weather Maps, but also Traffic Maps. This way before I head off for my morning commute to work, a click of the remote shows me how traffic is doing on my local highways, giving me an opportunity to doge some traffic should there be an overturned truck or something ... (See Attachment)

I did a bad job describing the problem I have with WRS in Cayars STV. WRS allows you to rename the buttons. Again see my attachment and you can see one button says "Local 10 Day Forecast" (I gave it that name) and wraps around 2 lines in the button. This is a screen shot from my 2.0.20 system. On the 2.2.8 w/Cayars STV for some reason WRS button text doesn't keep the font size and wrap, it makes the text smaller when you have more characters. Then if there is a lot more characters it will wrap. That's what I am trying to stop ... I just want static font size in the buttons that I can select.

Hope that helps ... T.

Here is the weather.com provider that comes with SageMC for the simple weather. Just replace the existing weather.exe with this one.

Aw GOD I FEEL Terrible for him. I cant believe that happened. Soo sorry to hear that.

I got run into by a white transam going 50 Mph when I was 17 years old. Was walking home with 2 friends from Pizza place. (The driver was drunk, and ran the red light, with girldfriend in passenger side)

It is a true miracle that I survived. Its a long story too wont go into details.

Read the rest of that thread or check out the files it comes with -- it isn't supposed to have an exe file.

Yea, I only asked because mlbdude referred to replacing weather.exe in his post.

So, you are saying I should just install it per the thread ... no problem, I can do that ....

Thanks!! T.

UPDATE! Yep ... Thanks Andy and mlbdude !!!! That was the ticket ...
I now have both Simple Weather from Weather.com for the family and WRS with Traffic for me.
This is VERY cool!! You guys are awesome!

'Pretty simple' for you maybe. What if you don't know your zip code or if you're on the metric system?

As a side note I think it's kind of funny that the options are Metric and 'English'.

peace . . .
