Jittery video after ff/rw (bug?)

Is Sage ever going to address the issue of "jittery" video after a ff/rw when using VMR9 and DirectX 9c? Have they even acknowledged that it is an issue and they are working on it?

Apparently FSE requires the use of the DirectX 9c quartz.dll file. But if we use the stock 9c quartz.dll file we get "jittery" playback after performing a ff or a rw (unless I am the only one with this issue). Going back to the 9b quartz.dll file fixes the video issue, but you can't use FSE mode and it breaks other applications. Sage has been demoted to our "watch it if Tivo misses it" PVR instead of our main TV PVR because of this issue.

If I am the only one with this issue, then I appoligize and will continue to research what is wrong with my system specifically.

There is no way you are the only one with this issue... I have been complaining about it for a while now.

It's seems very strange to be adding all these new feature and porting to different OS systems, when meanwhile there is a serious issue that has be plaguing Sage sine DX9.0c came out.

To be able to live with this and not want to burn my htpc to the ground, I've changed skip forward 2 and skip back 2 to be 1 sec, then I mapped a button using girder that issues these two commands in a row. This way, everytime this happen (read: always) I hit this button a few times and it eventually comes back to the proper display.

As far as I know, Theatertek has avoided this issue with the option for YUV playback. So it's not even like the solution is unknown.

There are no workarounds with this if you plan on using SageTV 3.0's VMR9 and Full Screen Exclusive.

This is something that affects ALL PVR apps like SageTV, not just SageTV... well all except for Windows MCE

Theatertek, using VMR9 fullscreen exclusive mode and YUV display mode, did not exhibit this problem.

Wheemer, Theatertek isn't a PVR app. PVR apps are Tivo-like apps like SageTV, BeyondTV, etc..

That introduces the resizing issue with nvidia drivers... witch, btw, has already been addressed by other PVR applications.

It also does not seem to come into play if you don't use DXVA or use a decoder (like the Sage one) that does not support it.

What resizing issue? I haven't noticed any problems using overlay with the Nvidia decoder.

That would be (most likely) because then you're feeding the renderer (VMR9) progressive video (deinterlacing is done in software), thus there's no chance for the fields to get inverted.

Would make sense since even with DXVA film DVD's don't have this issue.

This issue really gets my goat!

I agree that this has been around for far too long. I really thought that Sage would have pulled their finger out and sorted it for v3., as this issue was know about for ages.

It is pretty ridiculous that the best decoders (in my opinion being nVidia) can't be used reliably with Sage.

It's not like you can use the Sage decoders instead either as they are pretty poor quality.

From the comments above, it sounds like the users are going to have to find their own work-arounds rather than Sage fixing the issue.

So we use Overlay (resize issue with Nvidia, video quality not as good - for me, no transparent menus), discard FSE and break other apps by going to DX9b quartz.dll, or sacrafice image quality and use another decoder.

Unfortunately all of these solutions kill the WAF.

That's what I've been doing, which seems to be the best workaround for us. I would certainly like to be able to use full screen in Sage and TheaterTek though. Until this is fixed, that's not going to happen.

I'm assuming that the SageTV folks are aware of the problem since it has been around for a while, and that submitting bug reports would be a fruitless endeavor.

Well if you are a paying customer (which I'm sure your are) I don't think it is a "fruitless endeavor" that you let the folks at SageTV know about your problem and ask for a fix. I know that every time I submit a bug report I get a response.

To address your accusation: yes, I'm a paying customer.

I'm glad you've received responses for bug submissions. Unfortunately, SageTV does not respond to bug reports with beta software:

The resizing issue, to clarify, happens when using an nvidia display card. It's a issue introduced in their drivers quite a while ago. Everything looks perfect in Sage, until you play a video or start live tv, then the screen enlarges, like a massive overscan. Placing a portion of the OSD and the video off screen.

The focus on new software features over properly working current features is definately apparent... And Sage definately knows about these issues, they just seem to not care at all.

I have a 6600GT and run the latest drivers and have never experienced the resizing problem. There are just so many variables involved with computers that problems aren't always as simple to track down as everyone makes them out to be.

Blade: I think you need to use TV-out...

I am using overlay on an nvidia with TV-out, and am coping with the overlay/overscn issue. I have shrunk my OSD and set the aspect ratios to appropriate sizes when the video was playing... As I understood it it is an Nvidia driver issue introduced around 53.xx

Do tell what the other PVR apps do to work around it, I would be most interested...

Beyond TV does not suffer from this issue... I'm not sure of others.
