I just dont understand. My Sage does crash a lot, on the application level. I get this nasty send debuging infor message box. What is the problem? WHy people can have a system where it will not crash for such a long time while few others do crash? I did change the motherboard, I have system dedicated just to sage and nothing else is on that system and it does crash. Maybe because I am using those custom STV's? Maybe I should try to just use the original STV and see if that works ok? SOme people said when they upgraded to NVDVD 3 that they did stop having problems, where could someone purchase it from or maybe download it from? I've searched and I could not find anything other than 2.55 version which was sold out.

Anyway one thing is for sure, my sage is not crashing so much after I've changed my motherboard from ABIT to GIGABYTE This is such a relief.

Chris

Check for an error files created in the Sage folder after a crash. They may point to the items causing problems.

How many decoders (audio and video) have you tried? What results do you get with 3D Acceleration on or off?

It would be nice if nVidia offered the decoders only like Sonic does. Watching DVD on my 9 yr old tube is just fine with Sage so I don't need the added functionality of TT2.

I saw a cryptic post on another forum saying nVidia would be releasing them "tomorrow" (post dated today).

Not sure I really believe it, but...

My Sage crashed like 20 times per day on FF/RW/Pause/Play until I finally changed my mpeg codec renderer from PowerDVD to Intervideo non-css. Now crashes happen about once every month or two. What codec are you using?

I dont know if a thread has been started for this, but maybe it would be a good idea to start a thread of known programs and codecs that are prone to crashing Sage. Would help people find out whats wrong and let them avoid those programs. Would probably be nice for the developers too. I suspect, those of your who are having constant crashing are either using codecs or post processing programs prone to crashes. Wouldnt doubt if they also have programs like Weatherbug installed that are causing crashes too. (Note, I used Weatherbug as an example. I am not implying that it cashes Sage. ITS JUST AN EXAMPLE!!!!!!!!!) LOL Anyway, I would suspect these people who are soo prone to crashing probably could benefit from such a "danger" list.

Mine just crashes periodically for no apparent reason. I think it's the EPG updating, because it's generally rock solid during recording. On playback, sometimes it crashes when I do FF and RW a lot.

On the random crashes, it forces the PC to reboot. This is a Win ME system. I use Win ME to get around the way XP isn't well designed for small screens like 640x480. It's happened often enough that I've had to disable the scandisk on reboot.

I have no problem at 640x480 in XP.

Considering 640x480 isn't even available until you hit "List all modes", I wouldn't count on XP even installing without connecting a monitor. I guess it might be worth the hassle if it didn't create new issues. Does XP Pro handle this differently from XP home?

I've been seeing XP MCE OEM edition available for fairly cheap lately too. Hmmm...

Except for the intermittent reboots and the cursor which doesnt' go away on the screeen saver, I'm not having any problems with SageTV. I don't believe it's an OS issue. I believe it's in the EPG updates because that's the only thing going on between recordings.

This box never crashes on its' own without Sage running.

Most applications don't push the OS as hard as a PVR does. I'm not on a crusade to make people use current operating systems, just pointing out that 640x480 works in XP, so it needn't be a consideration when selecting an operating system.

If PowerVCR wasn't causing crashes, I don't think Sage could. Sage isn't pegging the CPU. It's barely using the CPU from what Speedfan reports. I don't really have anything against XP, but it tends to bring in a lot of its' own issues.

Well, I'd been having crashes for a long time when skipping ahead and stuff in a program. I also used to have a problem where the first time I try to play stuff in Sage it immediately hangs, then I have to kill the task. When I try a 2nd time right away it works fine. If i ever go like an hour between watching something, it will hang again the first time I use it. Anyways, somewhere along the line that stopped happening and I'd just get the skip-ahead crashes.

I changed to the new nvdvd decoders and now I no longer get skip ahead crashes. Not a single one. Unfortunately, my application hangs are back. Every single time without exception - very first try it will hang at watching soemthing. Kill task, re-open, it plays it fine on the 2nd try. This happen to anyone else?

So I think it could be the decoders that are causing some of the crashes.

I've tracked my frequent crashes down to a bug in .NET Framework, and uninstalled it. The box hasn't had a spontaneous reboot since.
