Java Garbage Collection

In reading through the notes on the newer Windows builds I see java garbage collection was removed. I never experienced problems with it but am noticing I'm running out of java memory without it. Is there a way to re - enable it or do I have to overwrite my install with the older version.

Thanks for the help.

Garbage collection itself wasn't removed, just reverted back away from the G1GC version.

If you're having memory issues turning on G1GC may not help but I think you should be able to turn it on by creating and environment variable called '_JAVA_OPTIONS' and set the value to '-XX:+UseG1GC'.

Inspired by your posting I have created an environment variable called '_JAVA_OPTIONS' and set the value to '-XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+UseStringDeduplication". Memory consumption dropped a lot and everything seems to be running fine ... at least up to now.

Thank you for that. I wasn't having memory issues exactly but I do have 4 HD300's and they do hit my max memory. With the g1gc enabled on the prior version I never hit the java max memory. I wouldn't really care about that except that along with hitting the max memory I'll get a random pause during playback then it looks like it's fast forwarding to catch up to the playback. Never happened with the prior version.

Several users were experiencing new out of native memory issues that seemed to correlate to G1GC so that's why it was turned off. They weren't running many extenders so some of us suspected a bug/issue with GC. If there's been any Java updates since who knows if it's better now.

I don't have too many plugins installed with my intent to keep memory usage down. So far so good for me.

One of the bugs I was running into is supposedly fixed in JRE 8u152 which appears to have finally been released. Need to find some time to test it.
