OpenDCT upgrade instructions

I have OpenDCT and want to upgrade it since I am upgrading everything else this weekend.

How to I upgrade to the latest version of OpenDCT while having a previous version still installed and running.

I think I know what needs to do for installation but want to make sure I here it from others first.

Also, should I back anything up (files, etc.) prior to the upgrade?

Thanks,
Chuck

On Windows I just run the installer--no stopping services, etc. Sometimes I even delete the opendct.properties file just to get the latest defaults.

Don't you need to stop the OpenDCT service before running the installer?

If you don't stop the service before upgrading, there's a good chance the installer will tell you that you need to reboot when it finishes because files it needed to update were in use.

Thanks for the added info.

So, I should stop the service, then run the installer.

Then what? Should I delete any files before or after running the installer? Do I have to do anything after the installer finishes?

Thanks for all of the help,
Chuck

Some people make a process out of it, but all you need to do (and all I ever do) is stop the service, install the version you want, then start the service back up. It will upgrade the current install to the newer version. OpenDCT will automatically create a copy of the opendct.properties file.

Thanks for the info.

If I wanted to get rid of my current copy of opendct.properties file, would I just delete it prior to installation? I think I would but wanted to make sure that wouldn't mess the installation up.

Thanks,
Chuck

Issues with one tuner card but not the other

I stopped SageTV and OpenDCT services, installed over top of my old version of OpenDCT and only one of my 2 Ceton infiniTV 4 cards work. All 4 tuners on card #1 work but all 4 tuners on card #2 are giving me an "Halt" error.

Everything tunes right in the Ceton Diagnostics Tool for both cards on the same channel I recorded in SageTV.

What logs do you need to fix this issue.

All 8 tuners worked just before this upgrade. I made sure of it.

Oh, I rebooted after the initial install, and after the first time the tuners failed. So, I restarted the PC a total of two times after installation.

Thanks,
Chuck

I attached the opendct.log file by just adding the .txt to the end of the file. Let me know if that doesn't help.

The issue should be around the 2:42PM EST time area.

Thanks,
Chuck

You're getting bit by timing issues unique to the InfiniTV devices. If you restart the OpenDCT service without restarting the computer I bet you'll be fine. I would then just change the OpenDCT service to start delayed in services.msc. Every time I try to improve this piece in OpenDCT, it breaks something or has bad behavior for HDHomeRun users, so I don't plan on making this any better than it is right now.

That fixed it.

When I change the startup type from Automatic to Automatic (Delayed Start), which is the only delayed start option, do I need to stop the service, then change the startup type, then restart the service?

Also, how long is the delayed start. How soon after reboot can I connect to SageTV server and tune a program?

Thanks for the quick help,
Chuck

It's usually about 5 minutes at most.

Thanks again for all your help. It seems to work consistently now since it is delayed.

No problem. Those InfiniTV 4's are particular pains to deal with because they are just so slow. I'm glad things are working now.
