Plex has a more current and solid playback engine. That will probably give you a nice experience without too much work.

However, I don't use Plex and (recently) have not had problems with Placeshifter. The caveat with Placeshifter is that if your stream isn't "clean", (Comcast has gotten pretty bad with "unclean" streams in my area), it can cause issues with Placeshifter, (on the LAN or remotely). I now transcode everything after recording and Placeshifter works great.

I really like commercial auto-skipping which Plex doesn't do, but I hear it now uses edl files as "chapter" markers, so guessing skipping is just a one button press. If Emby implements something like that I may try it again just to skip the transcoding of all recordings.

I will have to test that. I would missing the commercial skipping if I had to use Plex.

If you bandwidth from home to your android device is sufficient to stream without transcoding, then the miniclient will handle it just fine (you'd have to disable the transcoding, likely).
