Modems and switches
Have been trying to get SageTV 9 going since I am cutting DISH cord this week.
All works well except an incredible amount of video stutter and pixelation. After reading dozens of threads, and making tons of changes, and installing HDHomeRun on 3 different machines, including an i7, I am left thinking it is my network hardware, which is 100mb based. So, I have: 1 HDHomeRun (dual) 16 IP cameras (12 2mb and 4 4mb) 4 wireless laptops/ tabs 2 wired PC's From what I am reading it seems that HDHomeRun takes around 40mb by itself, so, I was going to buy a new switch, 1gig type, to support HDHomerun. But, my question: 1- Does the Router now also have to be 1gig? 2- Do the rest of the 3 switches I have also have to be 1 gig or only from router to HR to SAgePC? |

2. Again, no. BTW, you may need new cables if you don't have Cat5e. They should be labeled. You just need 1Gb between the PC, the Switch, and the HDHomeRun. Though you might connect both the PCs to it, if you transfer file back and forth. It would speed them up a bunch.

Technically you don't need 1G switches but I don't think there is a radical price difference between 100M and 1G switches so why not get the 1G? I have a couple of 24 port switches and a bunch of 5 port and 8 port switches (these are for rooms where I have more devices than network drops).
If you have switches then your router may not really matter as you are just using it for routing purposes rather than switching. But if you are buying a new router then you might want to make sure that it can handle WAN-LAN throughput of around 1G as, hopefully, within a few years we will all have gigabit internet.

TY
TY both,
I have a Netgear D2200d from Frontiernet and think I may just as well change that too. Again, appreciated - hope it stops the HDHomeRun stutter |

No more pixelation/ Stuttering
TY both again for answering.
My initial research was correct: one possible reason for SageTV to stutter/ pixelate (actually, it is HDHomerun, not Sage primarily) is the speed of the LAN connection. As mentioned above, I have multiple switches and ports, many ip-cameras etc etc. So, this Weekend I placed a separate 5 port gigabit switch, connected it to the modem and connected both the Sage server PC and HDHomerun - it works perfectly!!! Hope this can help others in search of perfect stream visualization or capture. |

I have two different 8 port gigabit switches next to my Router.
The first one handles all of the network traffic for the computers and other network devices. The second switch just has the SageTV server, HDHomeRuns, all of the extenders, android clients, and Smart TVs. Both switches have a dedicated port on my NAS. Splitting the AV and Data traffic really helped avoid any congestion issues.

Excellent
I will have to further remove the rest of the computers from the IP-cameras - otherwise, system works
