Any tips on working with docker containers

I have created a file called sage.sh which contains:"docker exec -it stuckless-sagetv-server-java8 bash" to facilitate getting to a bash prompt in my SageTV container.

Does anyone have any tips on copying files from a Windows or Linux PC into a docker container? For now in Windows I am copying files to a temp folder that I have set up in the Sage server folder. So this file in Windows/samba is \\server\appdata\sagetv\server\temp and in my container that maps to \opt\sagetv\server\temp. Is that the best way to do this or is there a better way?

I often use Notepad++ in Windows to edit files on a Linux server using the NppFTP functionality as described here. Is there any way to edit files within a docker container like this?

I have never felt the need to copy files into a container, because it wouldn't persist anyway.

what is it that you are needing to copy into the container?

Don't you need to copy the lirc configuration files into the container or am I doing this wrong? I thought that those files are in the container in /etc/lirc? Or do they go outside of the container in the core unRAID area? That could be my problem.

you can place hardware.conf, lircd.conf, and gentuner.lirc in the appdata/sagetv/server/lirc.d folder, and the docker container startup scripts will copy them to the right place in the virtual filesystem when the container is started.

Ok, that makes sense but does that mean that you should only make any changes in the appdata/sagetv/server/lirc.d folder and then restart the docker?

That is kind of a slow process isn't it as the docker takes a minute or two to start up completely. That's not an issue if everything works correctly on the first go, but if you are having to futz around that could take a long time.

Or could you make changes inside the container and then recopy back to this folder once you have everything working.

you can do it either way... the advantage of letting the container do it is that it will ensure that dos2unix is run on the file (in cause you edited them in windows), and it will obviously restart the lirc services, etc.

If you edit inside the container then you need to make sure that you are restarting the lirc service correctly to pick up the changes, etc.
