Serial Tuning Output Format

I was curious if there is documentation on what is sent when serial tuning is selected? I'm contemplating making my own "remote" that has a serial (USB) input and a IR output.

Why, you might ask?

Well, I have AT&T Uverse. Some time back, my IR just stopped working on my DVR. It all of a sudden had a timing issue where "11" or "111" was received as just a "1". I guess some update messed up the timing of repeating button presses. It made the box unusable. So, I hooked up a remote to an oscilloscope and decoded all of the button presses. I was able to see that one bit in the bit stream changes when you press a button twice. If you wait long enough between presses, the bit might not matter. I always had long timing sequences to make this work and all of a sudden, I was unable to find a combination that would work.

I also have a single tuner box that doesn't care and likes the same IR timings that the DVR used to like, so SageTV keeps working. I just know I could program the IR codes into a microcontroller so that they alternate for repeated button presses and know that I never have to worry again.

This brings be back to my question. Does the serial tuning just send the channel number or is there some text along with it? Where would I find this information?

Thanks!
David

Probably easier to utilize gentuner for your solution, as it simply calls a command with the channel number, so you can make a script/batch file to do what you need to do.

Maybe so, but I like the challenge .

Actually, I already have the micro sending the keep alive "OK" button press about every 6 hours, so adding the additional buttons and a 0 or 1 counter is trivial.
