EPG notification?

Is there a way to push a message to all SageTV users to notify them that the original EPG source will be terminated before it actually happens? There must be quite a few folks out there with servers that have been running without maintenance for quite some time now (as it was meant to be).

I was thinking something to the tune of a plugin update notification, as a warning of the upcoming change.

On a somewhat related note... I'm actually a bit curious how many people are still using the EPG servers (and SageTV in general).

Narflex can probably tell how many unique SageTV servers are pulling EPG data on a daily basis. Not sure if he would want that information public or not though.

There isn't really a way to do this, as far as I can tell.

The only possible way I can think of would be to provide an update to the google weather plugin that is essentially auto-installed on all v7 installs, and have that plugin create a system message - but that would still be very limited - they'd have to see the system message indicating an update to the plugin was available - they'd have to update the plugin, and then see the system message generated notifying about the EPG notice. This also would depend on them actually using v7. The most disconnected users that are most likely to be surprised by this could very well be using v4, v5, or v6.

I think he was more concerned with those who are using it and NOT visitors or even members of the sagetv forums.

What about using one of those "new channel added to lineup" messages?

Maybe add a new channel with as weird looking of an identifier as possible (like 12345 or 999-9) and filling it with a repeating show called "EPG is Ending" with details in the description. People would probably be curious as to what the new channel was. Could the Sage EPG server be made to create and insert this fake channel into the lineups?

I think most of the "support' for sagetv has more to so with the plugins, than actually sagetv. If you are user that simply setup SageTV to record shows and play them back, then likely you would never come to the site.

Now, if you have a bunch of plugins installed, web ui, bmt, phoenix, mobile web, gemstone, etc, etc, etc... they yeah, you might be in need of support. My guess is that there are many people that use sagetv, that never install any of these plugins, since they just want something that records TV.

My guess is that forum traffic will increase about 14 days after the EPG goes dark

If that's the case then, maybe Narflex should do a test take-down for a couple of days in March, as a wake-up call. Replace the EPG with a message link.

interesting. I never thought of killing all plugins. maybe I'll try that...
