Need advice on upgrading from Sage 6 to Open Source V9

Holiday season coming up and hopefully work will slack off some to give me some time to work on this.

Any tips on upgrading from Sage v6 to Sage v9.
Would also want to retain STV 3 (old Sage 6 UI) for WAF (at least to begin with)
Would eventually want to maybe get to Gemstone but with a Sage v6 UI look/feel.

what sort of modifications do you have on the sagetv 6 install? extras youve installed, and such. The v9 installer should have no problem installing v9 over v6 (backup first), but it may not work well with any v6 customizations you might have. Might need to remove them, revert back to the stock STV, and then upgrade, and then add customizations back in via the plugin system.

To be honest, not sure all the customizations that might be in V6. (been so long since I tinkered or had time to tinker). But think most of them could live without or should have V7/V9 plugins.

Some that come to mind (in other words, probably show stoppers).
Comskip
SJQ
one that turns on/displays CC on mute
BMT

For the Sage v6 look, would that just be copying the old <install_dir>\SageTV\STVs\SageTV3 directory ?

SJQ works, but you lose the web UI, (config changes have to be done by hand). BMT and comskip work. Don't know about the CC.

The installer is designed to upgrade V7 to V9 or a fresh install of V9. I have never tested a V6 upgrade.

I know that the V9 installer does NOT install the SageTV3 STV subfolders so you need to get those....however, I believe V7 created a new SageTV3 folder to work with V7 (could be wrong here but I read it somewhere I think). So you would need to download the V7 SageTV3 folders from GitHub.

Another approach that I would recommend is (after a FULL folder back is made), perform a V7 upgrade and when that is working well perform a V9 upgrade....likely the cleanest but it may be overkill... but I have never done it so that's how I would approach it if it was my system.

If I remember correctly SJQ had a radical change from V6 to V7 as V7 is in Groovy. So if you still use SJQ I am pretty sure you will need to rewrite for V7/V9. Slugger isn't supporting SJQ anymore but I am pretty sure that the V7 version works in V9.

That would depend on what SJQ was being used for. If you were just using it to launch comskip, for instance, there is a plugin specificly designed for that now (CommercialDetector).

I do have 1 box on V7 so know the groovy way.

Use SJQ for several things, moving recordings from SageTV to NAS is the main thing though.

As long as SJQ for V7 works with V9, I'd be good

major fail for me

i tried upgrading v6 to v9 sunday on a windows 7 box and had an issue when installing the vc++ 2015 redistributal which will not install for some reason. i downloaded it from Microsoft and stilt can't get it to install. I reverted back to V6 but now my HDhomerun setup file wouldn't run because api-ms-win-crt-stdio-11-1-0.dll is missing.

Is your win7 box current on patches as that is a common issue if vc++ 2015 wont install

This. You've got to install SP1 I think.

Take a look at this post...

I think the key there is to uninstall the 2015 redist and then run the installer but let me know how that goes.

If it does not work then I need an installer log so I can trace the error...

Please run from a command prompt...

SageTVSetup_9.0.11.483_R1.006.exe /log .\log.txt

This will create a detailed log. Please send me the more detailed log to see what happened.

nothing works

i've tried and tried to install the VC++ 2015 redist but it always fails. Atg the same time that i was upgrading sage, HDhomerun said it had an update available so i installed tha which appears to also have been built with win10 and its gui or setup program won't work because the dll is missing. Not sure what i can do. Windows update keeps listing the same 12 updates and after i install them, it lists them again next time. what's going on with that? i've attached the vc++ log file but doubt it will tell you much. kb2999226 keeps saying the update isn't applicable to my computer.

What a mess. now my atsc tuner isn't tuning any channels for some reason. argh. wish i never attempted the upgrade. plus i had several ax files that couldn't be registered or something during the failed upgrade.

So did you uninstall the vc++ update? i believe that is the key step in the post i linked to.
