Trying to replace old sage server and can't get anything from the tuners on new box

I've got a clean sage 9x install, and installed the 32bit version of OpenDCT (because I used the 32 bit version of java) and I get the configuration done (run as console) and sage can see the tuners and I get them installed but no matter what, I get NOTHING from the tuners if I try to watch or record (or even 'preview channel' in setup). I'm using it with the same Ceton 6 network tuner that I've used with my old setup (and which continues to work on that box with SageDCT), but wanted to switch to opendct since it apparently is better, or at least in active development still, and I don't have any recollection of how I setup the old one, so if I have to learn, I figured I'd learn the one that is still active or whatever.

Anyway, is there any way to test this to figure out where it's breaking down?

Any suggestions how to troubleshoot or get it working would be much appreciated.

First, you need to see if it's a problem recording the stream, or playing it back. Try doing just a recording from the guide, and see if the file is being created, and if it is playable outside of sagetv.

Yes. Record something, then check in the recording folder and see if the file is there, and that it's filesize is growing. This indicates that the recording part is likely working, but you are having problems playing it back.

I'm using windows 7, not sure which codec. It's a clean install... Did I maybe miss something?

The open source no longer has the proprietary codec/filters in it.

I asked about the OS cause Windows 7 has one supplied by Microsoft, Windows 10 doesn't. The LAV filters seem to be very popular as well.

OK, but windows 7 should work out of the box without the 'lav filters'? (which I have no idea what they are...??)

OK, on second thought... It's not working, but I foudn the culprit. it appears that if I set the recording directory to the NAS I intend to use, either as the \\nas\folder\ or as the mapped drive.. What's the best way to get that working? I have permissions and can write to the nas (and I even see sage create the 0kb file when it tries to record to the nas).

Any thoughts?

the SageTVService can only access a network location (\\SERVER\SHARE) if the service itself is running as a user, NOT as LocalSystem (which is the default). You can set this via the SageTVServiceControl program.

The Service can never access a mapped drive, because mapping only happens withing a user session, which the service does not reside in.

Now, if you are seeing a 0kb file being created, then sage IS able to write to it (creating the empty file), but openDCT is not. This means that opendct needs to be run as a user as well (in the services control panel), or you need to configure opendct to use mediaserver mode (where it sends the data directly to the sagetv service, and lets IT deal with writing the file).

Yea, I was still running in 'non service' mode, I had modified the default recording location which I think was part of the problem. I recreated it from scratch just now and it works using the same UNC. I'm guessing maybe it had to do with the 'keep 2g free' since the new location got set as 'use all' and 'ALL available space'.

Not sure why taht would affect it, but I think it's working now. Just got to get the favorites and maybe old recordings now...
