If I'm understanding you correctly, this image is the screen I'd be looking at, dealing only with Internet traffic;

I see mumblings of the EdgeRouter Lite model not supporting pppoe out of the blocks - do I assume this means that it won't be able to sit behind the DSL modem and negotiate the pppoe user/pass?

I also see folks claiming they are not getting gigabit speeds. If there is a gigabit switch involved that all internal LAN devices are plugged into, that is currently behind a Netgear R7000, getting 100+ megabyte/second data rates between computers, will I continue to get the same gigabit speeds, even if the Gigabit Edge router can't seem to perform up to that? Do I assume that once the routing is in place that the unmanaged gigabit switch handles it on its own?

On the router's LAN side you should ONLY have a switch (not a hub!) plugged in. On the router's WAN side is your DSL modem. That way you should only see Internet traffic and not LAN traffic on the dashboard.

I do not have a Ubiquity router (just WiFi gear), so can't speak to its PPPoE abilities. It seems to be available based on its data sheet and a quick Google search says it's configurable in the GUI since 2015, but again, I can't confirm. It is probably also possible to let the DSL modem handle the PPPoE negotiation, but you'd have to take it out of bridge mode.

Your LAN performance will not be affected by the router's speed as that traffic only travels through the switch, (again, don't plug anything but one switch into the router's LAN ports). I personally have two switches plugged into my router, (well, one switch but two ports on different VLANs). I don't route traffic between the VLANs, though, so it doesn't impact anything. (You may do something like this if you want to have a "guest" WiFi network that lets people connect to the Internet but not your LAN.)

I am currently running a tplink TL-SG1024, so it looks like LAN performance won't suffer. Thank you, Karyl. And thank you to other folks for your input, very helpful.

I'll check on the DSL situation.

Another voice of support for the Edgerouter Lite here.

I can't comment on pppoe but I can say that its a rock solid piece of kit for the price of a consumer grade router.

Easy to set up also with current firmware (there are guides on youtube if it ships without current firmware - mine did).

Hey, Eric. I think the company is finally looking into the Edgerouter Lite. I believe they have a pair of T1 lines coming in (which is all that's available to us unfortunately - didn't a T1 used to be great, back in the day!), so apparently pppoe isn't an issue. I really appreciate the fantastic technological minds here in this forum.

Thank you, folks.

LOL, I haven't heard the nomenclature T1 in a long time, but it sent a chill up my spine reading it. I must be old. Hard to believe that it's still a thing.

I'm pretty sure that the Edgerouter will load balance across 2 WAN connections (I recall this was one of the configuration Wizards offered in the current firmware).
