how did you update your SageTV server? Did you let Windows auto-update your existing box, or did you reinstall a clean W10, Sage, etc.?

Well here is one "for instance" on the importance of updates (and to be clear, I used to think the same way, and rarely updated).

There was recently a security hole in RDP. I had a client that was hacked by exploiting this hole. Quite literally, someone was able to login via RDP, with an account that DID NOT EXIST and drop a payload of ransomware on their PC. Fortunately, it wasn't one of the newer, network aware ones. Locked up their PC tighter than a drum. Could not open any files. And the hackers wanted $2k for the decryption key.

That's why I regularly do security updates.

I never said do not do updates .... what I said if you do not want to just download updates when windows wants to is to disable the "Windows Update" service ... then you can choose for yourself when you want to download and do the updates. Also at that time you can chose to hide updates you do not want.

It is best to update as the Microsoft DVD decoder is crippled in Windows 10 it does not decode MPEG2. With a clean install You would need to buy the Windows DVD Player which is 14.99..... an update automatically installs the DVD Player.

What I did was backup my server and Sage Folder. And made note of my share names and drive letters. On my Server I formatted reinstalled 8.1 and just used the Windows update to Windows 10 ... setup my shares reinstalled a clean SageTV then just copied over the backed up Sage Folder.. On my Windows 7 test machine I just did the update and kept everything... that worked out fine it just removed WMC.... but now I have WMC working on my Windows 10 machines.

yeah, I'm thinking if I switched to 10 I'd want to do clean installs of lots of things. Good point about the DVD player. Would that effect the ability to run .vob rips from inside Sage's DVD player?

Never meant to imply that NYP. Just felt like the general feeling in the thread was going that way. And since I have had quite of few customer of late with some serious issues, I'm a bit overly careful and overly sensitive about it

No problem I value good discussions and varying opinions I am always surprised what I have learned from discussions with people with different knowledge on this forum. I always welcome other users opinions.

I am talking about the Microsoft DVD Decoder it has nothing to do with the SageTV Decoder or any other decoder.

You can read more here.

ah, ok. So Sage will continue to be able to play DVD's - that's all that matters.

I don't think I've had windows auto-check for updates for about 10 years...
