Arrgggggh - windows update!
Its sunday..
but yet I set an alarm for 6.30AM... so I could replace my broken cinergy 2400DTi with a TBS 6284 quad HD tuner with the family asleep, nothing scheduled to record, installation guide assimilated, ready to crack open the box.. then on shutdown "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 91" Its 8:10 and its only on 27. Thought I had all the auto-update crap turned off So pissed off! |

Same problem with my laptop. I don't use it every day so about half the time I go to use it, it wants to shut down in 10 minutes. Annoying.
I have two Linux servers. Both have been running for years, one was rebooted last year, the other was rebooted about 18 months ago to install an new hard drive. Both are running perfect. Windows just doesn't get it. |

That is why you should configure your Windows updates to just notify you when they are available and let YOU choose when to download/install them. I have it set that way on all my machines.
It kept the multitudes of viruses that Windows liked to call Windows Media Player or Windows Exploder as well as several other pieces of crap that M$ would try to cram down your throat off my machines for a LONG time.

I think this is what happened with me...
I had actually turned of automatic updating and it had stopped the popping up dialogs in the middle of the day to shut down to install updates in x mins. However the shutdown button - which are normally set to be "switch user" is modified by windows to be "shutdown and install updates". I reckon had I looked before pressing there would have been a non-default option to shutdown without installing updates. Now all the updates are in its gone back to "switch user". Perhaps I missed an windows option somewhere - or maybe it is evil M$ tricking me in to updating :-) Michael |

There are a few options, regarding whether do download and wait to install, never download, or download and install on schedule. You apparently had the download and wait to install option - which it chooses to do on a shutdown (since if you are shutting down windows, you 'obviously' are done with it). You DO have the option to restart instead of shutdown, and it does not install the updates.

Well at least the TBS quad is a great card to install.
I installed mine on Sunday and have it working fine against the sudbury transmitter with XMLTVImporter for guide as the default DVB-T2 guide on the HD channels seemed a bit out.. |

I have my Windows 7 set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
But Microsoft is sneeky. Most of the time, if there are new updates available, I will get a pop-up from the Taskbar letting me know (and I can choose to install them). However, sometimes (presumably for certain critical updates), it will not give me the pop-up. Instead, it removes the "shut down" button from the Start menu and replaces it with a "Shut Down and Install Updates" button (it also appends a small icon). When this happens there is a way to shut down without installing updates, but it's not at all obvious (you can't do it from the Start menu). You can instead press <CTL><ALT><DEL>. Then in the lower-right corner you will see a red power icon with a small drop-down menu arrow next to it. Click the arrow to see the menu an inside will be a choice to shutdown without installing updates. But, this is all very frustrating. It seems to go contrary to the setting (which is supposed to let you choose) and when you are in a hurry to shut down, it's easy to miss that Microsoft has changed things on you and click that shutdown and install updates button by mistake.

Right, that's why I have always chosen 'Do not check for updates'. Periodically, i will just check manually on my own, at my convenience.

Ran Windows Update last weekend and what to my surprise came thru was a Hauppauge Colossus Driver update. Was at Drivers dated - 8/28/2012 (30151?) :: now 4/3/2013 (1.8.31093.0).
Was occasional seeing the micro-pause - three hour recoding of China Formula 1 race was perfect (if that's any indication of future results ) Andre |

It looks like it is working better so far for me. I use to get at least 1 or 2 bad recordings per week - usually more. Only had one bad so far but it hasn't been a whole week yet. By bad I mean audio listed as AAC by SageTV. Before I would get several of those a week half played back fine the other half wouldn't playback at all. I also use to get recordings that didn't have ANY audio track listed by SageTV at all. Those never played. They would display a screen and then never advance - the time bar would stay at 0.00. Some of them I could jump through and display new screens others would just jump backward to the beginning of the padding and black screen. Now the one recording I've gotten with AAC audio plays back fine. I record with HDMI off DirectTV HR22-100 on my colossus. I was expecting to have to fiddle with the recording parameters when I upgraded like some people have had to with previous drivers - but I did nothing. I am still stopping and starting the SageTV service once a day. Next week I will try it without that and see if there is any change.

Thanks, Bob. I'm kind of curious to see if the unit still requires the daily reboot. I've been on the HD-PVR 1212 kick for a while, but have always eyeballed the Colossus for it's price and convenience hidden inside the computer. For those cable companies going all digital, it seems as though these are the only real options that [almost] guarantee Sage longevity.
Sorry if this is getting a little off topic, Michael, I usually don't like to mess with a good rant. |

anyone have an update on the new colossus driver eliminating the need for reboots?

I will be turning that off tomorrow night. So far I've only had 1 or 2 bad recordings. Alot better than the original drivers I was using so even if a restart is necessary I'm going to be staying with these. Next week about this time I should have a better idea about if a restart is necessary.

Windows Update Caused No Scheduled Recordings
Just wanted to let you know that to me the latest Windows Updates caused my SageTV not to schedule any future recordings even though the Favorites are all there and the programs appearing in the guide.
See my thread here about what I was seeing: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60265 |
