A couple tips for installing to SageTV 9

Because of the snow/ice storm yesterday, I did not go to work and decided to update my SageTV server. I wanted to download the latest Silcondust drivers and firmware, update to a different DCT, and upgrade to version 9. This took a lot longer than I thought because of a couple problems I didn't anticipate.

First, make sure your windows is up to date. The last updates I installed for Windows 7 were July 2013 when this particular server went live. The reason this is important is one of the recent updates is needed for the Visual Studios C++ redistributable.

I recommend you manually download this and install it yourself to make sure it works. Sagetv beta installer hung and it was not until I manually tried to install it before I figured out the problem. Many on the internet say it is SP1 for Windows 7 you need to have installed, but I have a feeling it is another Windows update that needs to be installed since I was running SP1. I guess I should update Windows more frequently.

Second, make sure you backup your previous sagetv folder. I have been using these scripts which have saved me in the past. I have a setup to backup every morning and a weekly on the weekend. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43497 I used the full backup before starting.

Because my first attempt at SageTV 9 failed, I had to quickly scramble to get everything set back up with 7.1.9 before prime time last night. I needed to do a fresh install of 7.1.9, and then I restored my backup overtop.

This morning I finished installing the windows updates and then did the beta setup again. This time it worked.

I am now running the lastest Silcondust drivers, OpenDCT, and Sagetv 9.

Always a good idea to do a full image of your C: (or whatever) drive before you start any major surgery like this. Good advice.

Yeah, I should have done an image first and could have restored to the image. Was not thinking. I'm just glad I backed up the SageTV though.

Did you install over your old sage 7.19 ? I tried this and got a java error which I think was because I have java 8 installed.

I did. I used this file because it was an EXE and appeared to be an installer, even though it was a beta. https://bintray.com/artifact/downloa..._beta0.003.exe

I would be using Java 1.8 if it was not for the fact that I use the webserver.

Think I will be looking to make the move to OpenSource V9 shortly. I've got my old v7.19 going and I think I've got it pretty well setup. so is it (now) a simple matter running an open source installer over the existing v7.19 install?

Also I think I've got the Java version that came with 7.19. should I upgrade that?

I'll make sure my windows is patched - although I plan on going to ten soon (baby steps)

I see the OP used a beta installer link. is that still the link I want to use or is there something newer?

The installer is using the same upgrade product code as v7, so it will literally upgrade it. It should also preserve the commercial codecs that can't be packaged with the open source version. I suspect it's going to be very standard to install v7 then v9 even on a fresh system if you want those codecs to be available. I would make a copy of the SageTV folder just in case things don't go as planned.

I'm still on v7 for my primary, but I've been following along with v9 in vm's.

OK so to get OpenDCT working I needed to upgrade my java from whatever the old one was that 7.19 came with. And of course I upgraded to the latest. Then I installed the mobile web client and it didn't quite work. So I had to downgrade to Java 7 update 80. Did that and everthing was working great.

so it was time to upgrade to SageTV V9 - did that using the link provided in this thread and it went smoothly.

regarding Java - for *now* I have to stick on version 7, and I think I need to stay with the 32bit version?

I have not tweaked my java settings. I seem to recall there was a tool that would do this for you? I assume that will still work with SageTV V9? What should change the Java settings too? If I recall I used to set it to something just under 1mb?

I've got a Nexus Player on the way so I can try out the android mini client next

As always Thanks in advance everyone!

Here is the link to the utility
You can also do it manually this way

click start
click run
type regedit and click ok
expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
expand SOFTWARE
expand Frey Technologies
under SageTV in right window doubleclick on JVMMaxHeapSizeMB

set as follows
100h=256
200h=512
300h=768
400h=1024

I recommend 400h=1024

As info, Any 64 bit system with a 32 bit app like sagetv...thats where windows puts the registry entries.

One other thing to remember if your installing the release candidate of V9 of sage tv over the old beta .003 is to install it twice and use the repair option.

I had to do this for both the Client and just now for the placeshifter as the placeshifter refused to stream right until I did a repair install on it as well.
