Videos sorting...

Hello!

I use this daily and still love it. I also use it to view my DVDs. I rip them to external hard drives then watch them when I get a chance. My favorite sort for this is to sort by recently added at the top. I do this because I typically like to watch new movies/newer releases first and when I get them and burn them they then show up at the top of the list.

This all works great with one caveat... so long as my external drives always stay connected and nothing ever happens with the USB ports or anything like that. And, almost always a couple times a year it seems like something DOES happen. I have around 2,300 movies ripped to the hard drive on probably 10 external USB drives. If/when a drive gets disconnected for any period of time then reconnects, Gemstone sees all the movies on that drive as "new" movies and evidently overwrites the date that was input previous for when it was added to the collection. This pretty much messes up my sorting method where my newest movies are first because now all the movies on that one drive show up first

I see Gemstone is being updated and still worked on (THANKS!). As a suggestion, could it be changed such that if this field is seen as blank it adds the date the movie was added but if the field has a date in it already it does NOT overwrite with the current date? Or at least make this an option? Doing this would ensure the "date added to collection" field stays the same even if a drive gets disconnected then reconnected at a later time.

Thanks!!!

Can you provide a few more specifics...

- which Flow are you using
- what specific sort attributes do you have set - is it Date Added ?

BTW: I have a Flow sorted by Date Added and I use it all the time for the same reasons (or similar reasons) and I have never seen the date get lost or reset. They are all on a NAS but the NAS has been shutdown before and I do not lose the dates.

Thanks for taking a look!

- I don't believe which flow I am using matters. I had a couple flows where I had the same sort and both were affected. But, I normally use the Wall Flow.

- Yes, it is the "Date Added" sort.

When I rip a new DVD, a few hours later if I go to Videos and the DVD has been imported, it shows up as the first DVD in the upper left corner. This is perfect and exactly what I want.

Just to be clear, if I unplug one of my external hard drives then plug it back in a few minutes later, nothing changes and everything stays the same. I think the change occurs when the drive is unplugged then a SCAN is done for imported media. After a scan is done THAT is when the drive is seen as not being there. Then, if I plug the drive back in, after the next scan, all the movies on that drive are seen as "new" because they dropped out of my Videos collection (I see the number go down in the lower left of the screen after the first scan when it notices the movies are no longer there). During this time I do NOT change anything on the drive and all the xml stuff and properties files are still there so that is why I think what would work would be to make it so it did NOT overwrite the "Date Added" field if there was something already there. Would be OK to overwrite other stuff, like location, because it's possible the external drive got a new drive letter for example... but I can't think of a time where somebody would want the Date Added field to be updated too because it really wasn't added "right now" but was instead added back when the Date Added field was first filled.

Did that make more sense? Thanks!!!

Yes it makes sense now. This really is not a Gemstone issue as what would be occurring is the media file is being removed when sage scan does not find it so the original date added field is not just blank, it does not exist in the database as the media entry would not be there. When sage sees the file again it is new to sage and added to the database with the current and only date added.

Perhaps with some fiddling with VFS Phoenix views there may be a way to use the media file date ( the actual OS files system date) but I have not tinkered with that myself to see if it's possible.

Otherwise I see no way to resolve this in gemstone nor in sage core.

Ahhh.... I see. I made the incorrect assumption the "Date Added" part was kept in a movie specific properties file.

Well, if you run across a way to do this while tinkering in there, please think about me and this post. LOL!!!!

Thanks much for your work on this stuff. I still use SageTV daily and all the modifications and plugins you guys do make it exceptional Thanks again!
