Universal remote codes and HD200 / 300 extenders

I need a universal remote for my LG tv and Shaw Direct sat box. It's not a setup I want to spend $50 on for a Harmony that needs programming (I've got enough of those elsewhere). Also at that location is a HD200 / HD300

Are there any cheap-as-chips universal remotes (RCA $10) which contain codes for another device (DVR, DVD player, etc) that would also control a majority of the functions on a Sage extender?

I've read a bunch here about IR programming, etc., but just wondered if anyone had magically discovered that an HD*** extender could be controlled by codes from a Sony Tivo for example.

red herring, eh?

I've never stumbled upon such codes, but I've not really experimented. Your best, low-budget bet is to find a JP1-enabled universal remote and buy an interface cable to hack the remote. If you are totally unfamiliar to the concept of JP1 remotes this may be too daunting a path. If it is not, then it provides all the flexibility and functionality you will need for now and the future (at least for infrared-controlled devices) ...

A Sony RM-VLZ620 can be found for under $20. You will have to teach it the codes for the HDx00. Takes me about 30 minutes to set up the remote for use, including telling it the brand of the TV set, etc.

I know you said you didn't want to spend $$$, but I picked up a Logitech Harmony Smart Control, and after I got past the first setup (software for registration SUCKS) it's worked like a charm. No codes entered, just make/model numbers, and I was surprised with the advanced options. It works the way I want it to, not the way someone thinks it should!

I just wish it had wireless into my table (BT or WiFi), so I could control the tablets volume.

I have programmed cable TV remotes like the Comcast xFinity ones that you can buy on eBay for about $6. Just need a jp-1 cable.

The remote codes are documented and you're able to add them on.

Can't you teach the HDxxx new commands from other devices?
