Hauppauge 1600 wont work anymore

Ok having problems about to rebuild system and have new parts ordered BUT in mean time lost on of my Hauppauge 1600 cards . I have 2 of them to tune in over the air HD tv. One just disappeared. So I try to ad it back and in the process I screwed up the other 1600 card. Something has changed in the setup from what I remember. I used to be able to pick "over the air broadcast tv" but when I choose this I get the screen shot below. Iam like WTF. So I go back choose cable tv use my zip code but neither of my 1600 card can tune in any station that way. I don't remember having to choose cable before I just chose "Over the air broadcast" BUT it wont let me choose that as when I do I get the screen below. NO idea why one of my 1600 cards just disappeared maybe motherboard is failing as its OLD system single core 3 gig 1 gig ram old GeForce 6200 vid card win xp

New system will be dual core 3.2, 2 gig ram ,win 7 32 bit SSD c drive and 1 terabit mechanical drive for recording too.

My current system also uses old PVR 150 card connected to Verizon Fios STB via S video-cable to tune in channels I cant get with an antenna. that's still working now, hoping to continue to use that on new system build. Hence 32 bit windows and only 2 gig of ram. Use USB uirt to operate sage and change STB channels. OH still using Sage 6.6.2 as I don't like version 7

So right now neither of my 1600 cards are working so no over the air tv channels' can be recorded now. Cant figure how to at least get one of them working

Also since one card just disappeared maybe one of the 1600 cards is failing not really sure I suspect motherboard as I have been having lockups while just watching recorded shows when none of the capture cards were recording anything. Hence me thinks its motherboard or my old video card is real problem. I still would like to get old system working until I get my parts next Monday for new system.

Yes, the OTA setup changed slightly (quite a long time ago). Just follow the instructions shown in your screen capture to get the right channel lineup.

As to the problem with "disappearing" tuners: my first step would be to verify that they show up in Windows' Device Manager. You should see both 1600s under the "Sound, video and game controllers" portion of the tree on the right-hand side. Furthermore, a right-click on each tuner entry should bring up a new window; under the General tab, the Device status should be "this device is working properly".

If the above is OK, then my next step would then be to launch Hauppauge's WinTv app and verify that you can see video using that.

If all of the above is ok, then it's time to dig into the Sage tuner setup.

thanks

Yes both cards are in Device manager and working properly. I haven't yet tred the Hauppauge software. Not sure I even have that loaded on PC if not I will load it and make sure the cards are both functioning. If they are then I might just limp by until I get my new PC parts. Should have them by Monday.

I hope I don't need to buy any new capture cards. The 1600 are now discontinued so not sure what card I would buy to replace it. I would prefer to get a capture card that still used the PCI type slot. New motherboard has 3 PCI slots and would prefer to use those BUT it does have 2 PCI express 1 slots also. BUT eventually want to put that new Colossus 2 card which will use a PCI express slot.

Thanks for help I will try and do rest Friday to test cards.

Best option for ATSC reception is probably the HDHomeRun. Then it won't matter what motherboard you have, and the thing doens't even need to be located at your server (can be installed closer to the antenna, for instance). The standard HDHR4-2US has 2 ATSC/QAM tuners, and runs about $80 new.

I looked at this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815345015

Its an external capture device. Has antenna connection BUT then a Cat/Ethernet connection. My new PC has ONE built in Ethernet port so it looks like in order to connect this capture device to PC I would need a second Ethernet port? Plus Iam assuming Sage TV would then see this external capture device?

It does look like my one 1600 has failed as it wont play TV with the Hauppauge software. the one card does the other no. So I need to replace the one 1600 card. Would prefer something internal over an external capture device. BUT since this one does have TWO tuners I again iam assuming it can record TWO different channels at same time? If so and I keep the one working 1600 card plus the PVR-150 which records off STB then I would be able to record 4 shows at same time? This assumes the Homerun device can use BOTH tuners at same time?

If I go that route then I need to buy a Ethernet port card so I have 2 Ethernet ports in order to connect external Homerun capture device.

PLUS Sage TV needs to be able to see this external device and again Iam assuming it would? Plus Sage would need to be able to set up BOTH tuners built into this Homerun capture device.

That could work because the HDHomeRun will use a default IP address when connected directly to a PC. However I think most would get a router and connect both the PC and the HDHomeRun up to the router. If you already have a router but don't have enough ethernet ports available on it then get a switch.

ok right now my internet setup is there is a router in basement (2 story house)that came with Verizon FIOS. I have a CAT cable from basement router to TV/computer room(2nd floor, so 2 floors up-100 foot CAT cable). I then take that CAT cable and it goes into a SWITCH. The switch has both my main PC and my PC/DVR computer plugged into it.

Now consider me a complete no nothing about this, with that in mind are you saying the Homerun Capture device would plug into my SWITCH rather than directly into PC that has Sage TV on it? How would Sage TV see this Homerun Capture device? Iam just running plain jane Sage TV 6.6.2, I don't even know what the other versions (placehsifter/media extender) are or have a clue how to use them.

For 9 bucks I can buy a Ethernet PCI card and just plug directly HomeRun Capture device directly into Sage TV PC. UNLESS its real easy to get Sage TV to see this HomeRun Capture device when plugged into the SWITCH. SWITCH is about 10 feet away from SageTV computer.

trying to keep this as simple as possible plus any clue on IF I use this HomeRun capture device can I get it to use both tuners at same time?

Yes - plug the HDHR into the switch. Your PC should see any device that is plugged into the same switch as well as anything that is plugged into the same router that is connected to that switch. You don't need a second Ethernet port on your PC (that arrangement is actually more difficult to set-up).

So I will order this external capture device
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815345015
then just plug it into my SWITCH go into SageTV 6.6.2 under Video Setup. Click ad new source and Sage TV will see that HomeRun Capture device and then just go through normal setup like my older Hauppauge 1600 cards and will be all set.

Wondering if there is a Driver needing to be installed for HomeRun Capture Device? Just a little nervous about it actually seeing the Homerun capture device. Because if it doesn't see it I wont know how to make it see it were a internal card I know how to make windows find stuff it doesn't sometimes automatically see.

Or any suggestions on an internal capture card? For me an internal card would be a cleaner setup as the SWITCH is 10 feet away so I need to get a 10 foot Cat Cable because the Coaxial cable that needs to connect to HomeRun Capture device is right by PC.

Plus reviews on Newegg didnt look too good.

There is software that is supplied with the HDHomerun that you should install on your Sage PC first. If you are using digital cable, you run a scan for channels using the SiliconDust software first. If you are using ATSC over the air, you do the scan for channels inside SageTV. There are instructions in one of the stickies at the top of the Hardware section of this forum.

I've been running a pair of the HDHR4-2US network tuners with Sage 7 for several years without any issues. Go to SiliconDust's website for the most recent drivers & setup utility. Sadly, the Sage-specific setup instructions no longer seem to be on their website. I have a pdf version if needed. The tuner setup is pretty straight-forward, but slightly more involved than the HVR1600.

Since you're currently using the 1600, you might also want to consider the Hauppauge HVR2250 (or 2255), which is a dual-tuner PCIe card. Its install/setup is almost identical to what you're already used to. Another advantage of using internal tuner cards is a somewhat simpler channel-update process (for the HDHR, channel update needs to be done in it's own Setup app first, followed by Sage's tuner channel scan; this two-step process must be repeated for any change to the channel lineup). I have a Sage7 box that's running with a pair of HVR2250 internal tuners for OTA. I've had no problems with the 2250's for OTA with either Sage 6 or Sage 7. Unfortunately, I never could get the 2250 to work correctly with Sage 7 & ClearQAM. Hauppauge currently sells the 2255, which seems to be identical to the 2250.

If you have Verizon FIOS, wouldn't the best solution be the HDHomeRun Prime device with a cablecard? Additionally, if you're building the machine, go with Win7 64bit.

able to get a new 1600 card

I found a place on ebay in Canada that sells new 1600 card so I just bought one of those to replace my bad 1600 card 67 bucks. This way no surprises. Why I using win 7 32 bit on new system is I will still use my old PVR-150 for at least a few months then eventually replace with the new Hauppauge Colossus 2 card but not for a few months. System will only have 2 gig a memory which is plenty for this. Plus old PVR-150 cant have more or it crashes for some crazy reason. This is a dedicated TV PC . I have other more powerful PC's for other stuff.

Heck my current but buggy old system is only a single core 3 gig with 1 gig of ram and it could handle recording 3 shows at same time while playing a 4th. Its almost 10 year old PC. Time for a new system.

Oh what's a cable card? I would assume they charge a monthly fee to use one?

FIOS isn't available where I am, so maybe another Sage/FIOS user can stop in and clarify, but as I understand it, you would ditch your set-top-boxes entirely for a single cablecard that would tune and record on 3 channels simultaneously (with HDHomeRun Prime with cablecard installed).

In the end, I would think the single cablecard monthly fee would be significantly less than renting multiple set-top-boxes, and the operation of the SageTV system is much more fluid, with no more IR tuning required. I'm not even sure you'd need to keep one set-top-box around for the premium channels as I've heard that even their premiums are broadcast without the copy-once flag (needs verification).

I will have to call Verizon and see what a cable card cost per month. BUT I would think a cable card like a STB from Verizon could only tune in one channel per cable card at the same time BUT if iam wrong that would be reel cool if the Homerun does the tuning. 3 channels is all I really want. Heck I wouldn't even really need any of the 1600 cards for antenna broadcast tv. Thanks for the info.

Most cablecards today are [multicast] M-cards, and the cable companies that I've worked with support up to 6 tuners per M-card. Ceton has a 6-tuner device that will house this type of M-card and give you 6 tuners, Silicondust (HDHomerun manufacturer) has not released a 6-tuner device, but does have their 3-tuner device, which should be just what you are looking for.

You can verify with Verizon how many stations you can tune with (1) cablecard. If they say ONE station, I'm quite sure that would be wrong.

You should also ask if you need any other hardware from them (such as a Tuning Adapter or Digital Adapter if required to work with the cablecard), and if there is an additional monthly cost associated with that.

This thread has some Sage forum members that expand on what's available regarding premiums and such.

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60477

If a particular premium channel (like HBO, Showtime, etc) is "copy-once" and you wanted to use that channel in Sage, then you would still need a set-top-box, a Colossus or HDPVR, and an IR blaster of some sort (the USB-UIRT for example). In other words, you could run a cablecard with the HDHRPrime + Colossus with set-top-box and have (4) available tuners, but only the Colossus would grab the copy-once channels.

I am using a 1600 with no problem. When I got to that screen last , I think I chose cable and then followed the directions since I am still recording Over The Air tv with my 1600 and newer 2250

Yes I got my one card to work that way . My other 1600 has failed. It doesn't even work with the Hauppauge software. I have a new 1600 card coming off ebay.

I also have been looking at the HomerunPrime device. Looks to be quite complicated to get it to work with Sage TV. All sorts of modifying files which I have no clue on doing. Plus I haven't yet even found out what Verizon wants for a cable card per month.

But at least now I have 2 cards working (1600 & PVR-150 through S-video for STB) and will have all my new PC parts Monday. Have to remember to save the correct files so setup will be easy on new system. Iam hoping I can still use Sage TV 6.6.2 on win 7 32 bit rather than Sage 7 as I just don't like the menus. I heard I can make sage 7 to look like old version BUT have no clue on how to do that either. I hear plugin mentioned but have never used any plugins before.

With my 1600 and 2250,when I reinstalled them I had to make sure the drivers were not loaded and then have windows install the drivers it wanted to install and then download the hauppage drivers and reinstall them after I rebooted the pc.

I know it's a pain to do it but it worked for me as it also installed some sort of adapter as well with each card that the normal drivers from hauppage does not install.
