What's worth recording? I think the answer's obvious: whatever you want to watch.

I don't think I've ever set something to record that I/my family didn't want to watch. OK, well, some recordings have later been found to be mistakes and we really didn't want to record them after all...

I have no Real shows on my schedule either. ;-) Just A movie trailer show that shows 99% the same trailers. When I get Sunday morning I'll have 1 show. When Syfy (and others) starts their summer shows, I'll have a few again.

I record stuff I never plan to watch all the time. One of my best favorites is recording all shows with the category "special" on certain networks (keeping the most recent 10). That way, SageTV will record all the award shows and network specials that I never know are going on or would think to record but may want to see. 80% of the time I never watch the specials but it is an easy way to make sure you don't miss anything.

what none of the current late-night crop seem to be able to do, in any way close to Dave, is interview a guest, honestly, and memorably. Crispin Glover, anyone?

Do you mean what Letterman, Carson, and Leno were able to accomplish before the internet? Or, do you have something in mind that one of them recently did which was an honest and memorable interview? My take is that, back then, actors NEEDED talk shows to promote themselves and their movies, whereas, now, they don't. Likewise, comedians no longer need to be invited to sit on Carson's couch in order to "make it".

Similarly, everything people used to get out of late night television is now online: movie/tv news, celebrity updates, new faces, etc. I think that's why the shows have changed; they needed to in order to remain relevant and, even then, they're struggling. They're more like variety shows than talk shows. Jon Stewart created an entirely new style of late night show and it worked great.

besides Stewart, I don't think Fallon, Conan, Meyers or James C are really any good at interviewing guests, regardless of whether the guests need to/want to be there. And actually, after seeing some of the old clips, which Dave did less and less of in later years, his on-site skits, bits (things where guests weren't involved) was some of the best material ever in late night.
Craig Ferguson was the next best without guests, but he often came off as kinda unprepared and bitter when doing interviews.
Dave was it. Hopefully Monsieur Colbert can get it done

I've never seen a guest on Conan seem like they didn't want to be there. He really is the best duplication of the old Dave (was closest thing Dave had to a protege anyway). Similarly, I liked Craig Ferguson, but I know he had a very narrow audience.

Ferguson was like Letterman in that he didn't seem to care what the conventions of the show concept were supposed to be: foul-mouth puppets? sure!

When you mentioned Crispin, that was the first one I found. Honestly, I couldn't watch more than a minute of it; it was ridiculous. I didn't find Crispin funny and Dave seemed as lost as I was. I read that Dave wasn't in on the joke, in that Crispin was in character, but that doesn't change how weird the interview was and that I quickly lost interest. That's specifically why I asked if there was something more recent.

comedy gold, and I'm not sure there was a joke to be in on. That always seemed like damage control to me, as Paul S seemed completely confused as to what was going on. you and I don't share the same like for weird comedy I guess - I couldn't take my eyes off Letterman's expressions as Glover babbled.

I do something similar, except using the keyword "Series Premiere". That way I get a chance to see any new shows. I then have a week to check it out before the next episode airs. If I like it, then I add a dedicated favorite for the series.
