Spinning arrow with Client & TV watching

After using an extender during the summer, I'm back to the client this fall so I can easily toggle to a browser to watch streaming sports on espn3.com.

However, I'm noticing the spinning arrow when I click a button on the WMC remote (used with eventghost) like play or stop and right before comskip skips a commercial. Its a 3-4 second pause while the circle spins.
  • My setup is wired cat5 with 2 10/100 switches between the server and the client.
  • There are no spinning circle or playback issues with my sagetv extender (hd300).
  • The client is win7 64 and is dedicated to sagetv and espn3.com.
  • I disabled real time scanning on windows defender.
  • Although I switched ports on the nearest switch, I'm doubtful that has anything to do with the problem since the extender worked fine.
  • The last time I used the sagetv client was late this past spring and there were no spinning circle problems.
  • I watched a ripped DVD on the server using the client this weekend and had no issues.
Any thoughts on what might be causing the spinning circle?

Another variable I failed to mention in my initial post was that I upgraded the SageTV server this past summer from XP to 8.1 64 and installed an SSD for the boot drive.

Just a thought, start with no plugin's and see if you still have this happen. If not start adding them back in until you find the issue. Also have you tried increasing the JVM heap size.

good suggestions. I will remove all the plug ins and see what happens. You're talking about just the client plug ins, correct?

Also, I DID have java heap error messages frequently with XP but have had none since upgrading to 8.1 64. I'll check that and see how much its using w/ and w/out plug ins.

thanks.

Please post what you find. I've been seeing similar behavior on my HD300 recently. I never had problems like this before but I recently moved my server onto a new PC with Win 8.1 Pro 64bit (previously running 64-bit vista home premium). It works most of the time, but occasionally it just locks up on me and I have to restart the server to get it to work again. I had thought it was a Java Heap Issue but I bumped the heap size and it is still a problem. I also am running it with Java 8.

Still giving it a little more time but so far it looks like downgrading from Java 8 to the latest Java 7 did the trick for me. Again my setup and issues are a little different. I am running a server and 2 hd300 extenders. When I moved my server I went ahead and installed the latest Java 8. It seemed to work fine so I left it alone, but after downgrading to Java 7 (32-bit of course) things seem much better and I haven't seen a lockup with the spinning wheel of death yet. I had one show that would consistently cause it to lockup and that one is working fine. If something changes I will post back here.

When I checked my Java readings were 242mb/322mb/779mb (used/total/max). using Java 7_65 I believe. These Java numbers don't seem to be a problem.

I disabled (not uninstalled) all of my client plug ins:
  • Commercial Detector UI
  • Comskip Playback
  • CPU Meter
  • Java Heap Monitor
  • Multi-speed Skip
  • Restart Sage from setup menu

However I was still getting the circle when I hit the 10 sec skip the first time for each commercial. After the first push of the skip button, each additional push did not cause the spinning circle.

I re-enabled commercial detector UI and still have the problem when comskip gets to a commercial it shows the spinning circle for 3-4 secs before it skips the commercial.

so I still have the problem

If I'm understanding your question correctly, I've never used anything but the standard UI...the one with the LCD TV w/ the lighthouse picture sitting on the beach...
