How does Sage handle it when you rename a video file?
I am cleaning up some of my imported movie file naming as I am starting to use Plex occasionally. When I rename a file and do a media scan it looks like Sage adds the file with the new name as a movie but it still thinks that the old file exists. How do you get Sage to realize that the file is no longer there without deleting it in the Sage UI? I believe that restarting Sage will do this, but are there other options as well?

If by a refresh you mean a Scan for new imported media then it doesn't work as it still shows the file by the old filename as well as the new.
Here is an example - I had a file named "TheBluesBrothers-309270-0.ts" in my Movie library. I renamed it to "The Blue Brothers.ts". When I browse my movies I see two listings, one for each of these file names. If I try to play the first file Sage says it can't find it. I can then delete it but I did this for dozens of files and it is a pain to be manually deleting - there must be an easy way of getting Sage to do this, ideally without restarting the service.

Stop Sage. Set advanced file recovery to true in Sage's properties file. Start Sage. The full path where the old file was needs to still be accessible for Sage to see that it's no longer available; only then will it remove the deleted entry from its database.

I have tried to keep it in the past but it appears to sometimes confuse scanners like the one in Plex. I don't really care that Sage maintains the data of the original recording - it can just treat it like an imported file.

I guess I should have kept the ID as a name suffix - that probably wouldn't have confused Plex. But it didn't like the lack of spaces.
The other thing I am going to have to do is rename files to include the SXXEXX info as my older Sage files don't have this as this didn't become a Sage standard until V7 and I think even then you had to turn it on. So lots of my files don't have this and don't import into Plex. I don't like it when you have to shutdown the service as there is almost always someone watching Sage in my house until the kids are in bed so I get a short maintenance window. And/or I have some tuners recording - right now two extenders are being watched and three shows being recorded.

That was a good idea - I have some code that Slugger helped me with that runs within SJQ that can rename files adding the S and E info - now I just have to find that code.
