It is not going to improve SAGETV all it could do is break it. ... also No Windows XP support on Java 8 for windows XP server users.

Is there a way to point SageTV to use a private Java instead of the system Java?
ie: c:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\jre SageTV runs on my main PC, and so far has survived all Java 1.7 updates flawlessly. However there's no guarantee that it will remain compatible with all future versions. One way to solve this issue is if I can configure SageTV to use an explicit JRE so I can continue to update the system JRE without fear of breaking SageTV. Can this be done? Thanks! |

I visit this forum very rarely now days, but it is funny that I went today to post a question about JAVA and someone beat me to it. I have almost the same problem as Wildgoose. I use a PC in my den for general computer work and also occasionally as a Sage client. I have JAVA 6 Update 26running on this computer and I never update it because of Sage, but I need to point Sage to this JAVA version, and update to the latest JAVA version for the other computer functions. I to would like to know if anyone knows if it is possible to do this, and if so how?
Thanks!

make sure you install the 32 bit version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) .. Opus linked to it.

Thanks for the help! I am glad to see people still using this forum. I have been using sage since 2006 and do not plan to stop anytime soon.

Another way you could stay on an earlier version of java for SageTV but have a current version for everything else is: SageTV requires 32bit java your other apps may work with 64bit. So install newer versions of 64bit and leave 32bit alone.

Doesn't Java look for and remove older versions now as a newer version is installed. However, it may be possible to disable this behavior
It used to you could easily run multiple versions of Java since you had to manually uninstall the older version. Problem with this is even though you may be using the new version you would still be open to attack on the older version. I have had more than one version (multiple 32 bit versions) at the same time. I really didn't get a choice of which version to run, it would use the latest by default, but if the program was making calls to the older version I would get a pop-up asking if I wanted to allow this program to use the older unsecure version.

I did some extensive testing and Java 8 with Sage and these are some of my findings.
1. Sage server and client work fine under Java 8. 2. ***** The WebServer does not work with Java 8 so as Bob Pointed out in a post above You can keep the latest Java 7 32 bit and Install Java 8 64 bit on the Sage Server. *****

Just the Webserver, correct? So you could basically update any other machine that accesses the webserver via browser, just not the SageTV Server itself?

Correct

I think was inferred earlier in the thread, but all the latest revisions of Java 7 and 8, with all those security restrictions, work fine with SageTV? No other tweaks needed?
I know with some of my older Java apps, I had to massage the security settings and put in some exclusions. I'm wary to upgrade my Sage Server (running Win7 32-bit) for that reason. |

When you say the webserver, are you talking just nielm's older Sagev6 version? Or does it also break the v7 version (jetty)?

What's the errors/stacktrace look like? No promises, but if it's something quick and easy I might be able to deliver something to address that.
