Why do my DVD subtitles not work?

I have my entire DVD collection ripped to my SageTV box as DVD folders. I rip them using DVDFab as "Main Movie" and include the English subtitles. However I can not get SageTV to show the subtitles. I use the options menu to enable them but nothing. I can pay the same DVD folder in VLC and the subtitles appear so I think I am ripping them correctly.

What am I doing wrong?

Can SageTV only display subtitles if I rip the entire disk and enable the subtitles through the DVD menu?

What format are your subtitles?

sub/idx or srt ?

I've had sporadic problems in the past for Sage with sub/idx so I just use srt files now.

My DVDs are ripped to DVD folders (ie VOB files) and the subtitles are (presumably) embedded in the VOB files. There aren't any separate subtitle files.
