Microsoft DTV-DVD h264 and VMR9/EVR

All,

I have been using the Microsoft DTV-DVD decoder for h264 playback for many months now on my win7 32bit sage tv v7 client. It has been working great. But I recently movied this pc (Intel NUC) to my main TV in living room. The only thing that has changed is the TV. Now when I play back h264 mkv (720p) I get a flicker like frames are dropping are being added. The TV that was working fine before is an old sony that can only do 1080i.

After messing around with things I noticed that this is happening for only certain mkv files. It might not be related to the type TV (i need to test). What I have noticed is that if i use the VMR9 renderer the problematic mkvs will play fine. Am I losing out on anything using the VMR9 renderer?

I'll let others chime in about the renderer, but just wanted to mention that if the TV in the main room is a LCD there might be a "smooth motion" setting that you can turn off. Different brands all have different names for it but basically frame interpolation. While this setting maybe helpful in fast moving scenes such as football, in movies can be distracting to some. I usually set it to off or low.

Different brands do this better and is something that they are improving on newer displays. You don't have to worry about this with a plasma. Not sure if this is what you are seeing, just wanted to throw that out there
