Microsoft MCE or / with SageTV?
I'm a current Sage 2.0 customer and love the product. I'm running it on a PC dedicated to Sage.
I was recently at a computer show, and I noticed a vendor that was selling an OEM CD ROM of Microsoft MCE. I don't know anything about MCE. Is MCE a direct competitor of Sage, or is MCE a platform that would be worthwhile to install SageTV onto to combine the features of both systems? Sorry for the newbie question, but I don't know anything about MCE. Does MCE work with the Hauppauge 350 card (I think it comes with it's own MCE remote and a 250 card??) Thanks for any info - especially if Sage was installed on an MCE OS. -Steve2112 |

MCE is essentially just a program that runs on top of Windows XP. Is it a Sage competitor? Technically yes, it's a PVR/Media Center app, however practically no. Why not? Because MCE is supposed to only be available to consumers by purchasing an entire MCE computer. So when you compare Sage, a software package to MCE an entire PC/Hardware package they aren't direct competitors.
However there have been rumors that MCE 2005 would be available much more widely. To satisfy my own curiosity, do you know which version was being sold? |

I can say without a doubt it wasn't 2k5, it's not been released in the wild yet, soon, but not yet. The code has gone gold though, as beta has finished. They are saying they will release more publicly as tiem goes on though. I woudln't expect it at your local PC shop anytime soon tho...

I'm just rather surprised to see any version of MCE being sold to the public without being part of a PC.

Not a surprising for computer shows, you can often see "unbundled software" being sold.

You can buy OEM software, but usually you are supposed to buy a HD or mobo with the purchase. Never noticed MCE on our oem lists though, but haven't gotten one in a couple years.

Heck, I'd buy it just to play with it, I've been curious about it since it was announced, but I will not buy a pre-built PC.
