Playback exception on one client

Well, it's a long story, but the bullet-point summary is that I was experiencing choppy video on a Windows 7 client after replacing my server with a Windows Server 2012 machine. In desperation, I installed Windows 8 on the client, and now it seems I've taken another step backward. On the Windows 8 PC, I get a Playback Exception (video) whenever I try to play one of the ripped DVD's that lives on my server. I also get the playback exception when I try to play locally on the server.

Here's the weird part: I have another Windows 7 client, and the ripped DVD's play fine from there. Same decoder.

Any suggestions?

on windows 8 you need to install the media pack add-on to get the codecs.

Interesting. Do you recommend the media pack add-on, or is some other decoder solution superior -- arcsoft, lav,...?

Both. The MSFT codec for Mpeg (DVD) is good (as are the others and all hardware acceleration enabled).
I also use Arcsoft for h264 and VC1.
