Recordings "In Use"
For the past month or so I keep getting recordings from my HDHR's that are perfect in every way except that they seem to be marked as being in use by another program. I have downloaded utilities to check and have found nothing. I'm not sure what's going on.

Go to Microsoft.com. Search for and download "Process Explorer." It is Task Manager on steroids and lets you search for open file handles, the reason for the message. It identifies which process owns them and lets you close them.
I started getting the same error randomly about a month or more ago, but I have been too lazy to chase it down. I wait long enough and the problem fixes itself eventually. It's strange that, with no updates to Sage, things change and new issues arise. This one must be related to the OS updates. I have not updated Java in quite a while.

I haven't specifically tried Process Explorer but I have tried another program that's supposed to detect open files and tell you the associated program. It didn't find any open files. The strange part of this is that the "open" files survive a reboot. They are still considered open after I've shut the machine all the way down.

One thing I would look at is the pagefile. Need to make sure you have enough harddrive space on the drive you have it enabled on if enabled. You maybe buffering to that when you start playing a video hence in use error.
Take note of the size of the pagefile to see if there is some "housekeeping" needed there. If you have a small ssd and have pagefile to that, you lose trim support for the page file so the wear will show up quicker on a smaller ssd due to excessive writes. I generally either move it to a mechanical drive or turn it off if system has enough ram. Lose some speed but gain longevity off a ssd IMO. This is done in the disk management area. |

Looks like it might be Plex holding files open but even after I've closed Plex the file still shows as being in use.

I may just have to break down and do a clean install of Windows. It's been a while. This is my second upgrade. The first was from XP to Windows 7 and then to Windows 8.
I've been trying to get my network using a Windows domain controller but my SageTV system has a problem using the DC for DNS. Not sure what the deal is with that but during my troubleshooting I somehow messed things up and it's been acting a bit wonky ever since. As unpalatable as that sounds I think it's just time to start from scratch. Wish I had the new hardware for my future VMWare server and I could just migrate. That will have to wait though. Need money first.
