What System is This?
Does anyone know what software this projector is running?
http://www.houzz.com/photos/116529/-...-room-dc-metro I like their implementation of a movie wall.

It's a hardware and software solution I believe. J |

I've read about this before. It's one of those, "if you have to ask...you can't afford it" type system.
Very cool movie wall though and I have a feeling it could be duplicated with Sage.

I will have to look into that and do some testing. Seems like a much easier solution than writing a custom STV.

Is it that scary?
Five years ago I've been trying to implement a similar effect in studio because I didn't really like the v6 UI and did some experiment with decent results on a MediaMVP, however I reckon it will be really cool to have a kaleidescape STV in sage, it is very intuitive to use and have such a polished look... I don't have the same skills as the "Phoenix/Diamond/Gemstone" developers to do something like that by myself, but still I think it will be really cool. Eddy

I actually hate the 'crap flying all over my screen' effect that the cinemascape wall has. When I'm looking for a card, the last thing I want is someone continually moving the cards all over the table.

What's the point of the cards moving around? Do they move based on genre of the movies?

Kind of and is customizable, this way they reduce to the minimum the need you have to scroll around to find the title you're looking for and that can be instrumental when you have a very large collection.

But still not much less action than a drill down, and without the chaos factor. and while yes, this may minimize actual clicks, it really doesn't make finding something any faster, as after each click, you end up waiting for the reorginaztion, then look around the screen to find where you want to go, and then go there. It's all flash and no function. But that's really what most of kaleidoscope's customer base is looking for.

I'm pretty sure there's "regular" ways to access your collection too. IMO, the interface of Kscape isn't really that special, you could make a good case that something like XBMC is "better" (well at least prettier and flashier).
IMO the brilliance, the awesomeness of Kaleidescape is that it's a commercial, "legitimate" product that does what a lot of us try to cobble together with free/oss/half-baked/grey-market software. Kaleidescape is a system that from end to end works, and works extremely well and with incredible support. If I could justify the price, I'd buy one in a heartbeat, to get away from all the issues with PC movie servers, well except I'm a little concerned they can't survive the legal challenges indefinitely. |

How much do those things run anyway? Everyone always talks about how much they are like it's some unreasonably high price. I very well could be (and probably is), but I've never actually seen a quote for the price. Since they don't list it on their website I'm guessing it's in the "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" range.

The cheapest version I've ever seen is the Cinema One, which is $5k:
http://www.kaleidescape.com/news/pr/...Cinema-One.php But I don't see it listed on their products and it doesn't sound like it does Blu-ray. Used servers seem to go for about $8-10k for the server, I think it's more like $10k+disks or something new, IIRC players are in the $2k+ range, disks are like $1k/per (maybe more like $1500 now) and you need a Vault for Blu-ray's. It's pretty safe to figure on $20k+. |

The fact that their website has a section for "yacht installation" should tell you that it isn't cheap...

And with those prices, and 'feature list' - I'm wondering why anyone already registered on this forum is even interested.. ;-)

The kaleidoscape system is pretty nice. That's what got me into this htpc buisness in the first place with trying to recreate it for a fraction of the price many years ago. Trust in knowing that your sage setup is way more powerful. Of course you alone have to support it and whatever storage system you decided on :-)
