Teenager activity causes extenders not to be able to find server

My son has starting using my server box to play "Call of Duty" with friends.

He has installed the game, there seems to be something called Steam.exe that runs with it and he has also installed something called "Tunngle (beta)" which seems to provide a VPN so his mates can play in the same game environment.

Every couple of days or either one but sometimes both of my extenders suddenly cannot see the server - no amount of "Refresh" helps, unplugging/leaving/powerup on the extender makes no difference.

Rebooting the router made no difference.

SageTV is clearly running on the server and any extender is still in contact is fully functional and continues to talk to the server.

Also tried starting and stopping SageTV server which does not work.

The only thing that fixes it is to reboot the server box.

My teenager has been told to cease and desist for a couple of days and study for exams instead so that may help.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Michael

Fortunately not, I brain washed all members of my family to not even think about going into the server room

Seriously though, the VPN server looks suspicious to me, you could use the existing VPN server on Windows, is basic, but for the purpose it works fine and because is installed already it shouldn't cause any issue. I use it on my main server (which runs SageTV server) and listen to my music collection at work (LMS running on that server as well) without problem.

Steam.exe is a game download service. I've used it before (although I don't game much anymore). I can't see why either of those would cause problems with the network, but as routerunner stated, no one goes near my sage server (even now that I have virtualized it into my main machine, the house rule is only Daddy touches the Mac Pro). The ONLY time anyone goes near my computer is in the rare times that I am not home and someone has to restart the Sage (virtual) Server.

If finances aren't too tight, I would really recommend throwing togther a PC gaming system for him. It wouldn't have to be much, i3 or i5 and something like an Nvidia 550, 560, or 660 would probably do just fine. Just saying.

I've not setup COD on my server but I've run many other Steam based games off my SageTV server without issues. Sounds to me like there is a port conflict with the game and Sage. That could cause that type of issue, where Sage is unable to communicate until it is rebooted.

I'm not sure about running Tunngle though. It was my understanding that games like COD are Internet based and don't require people playing on the server to VPN Tunnel into the server. (i.e. act like they are on the local network) With the other games like that, you set up the server and open a port on the firewall for the players to enter the game directly from the Internet.

Again, I've not setup a COD game before, but I've never seen anything like that and if that is the only solution, fine, but if not, I'd not want people VPNing into my SageTV server from a VPN that gives them local LAN access.

The whole idea of running a COD server on my SageTV system sounds like a really bad idea to me. I'd prefer to get a specific game server than to have to explain to my wife why her TV didn't record!
