My time with Plex..

Hey guys been pretty quiet on the forums as of the last year or so allot of personal stuff going on. Anyways I know many are still using sage happily. I needed a better way to have all my media portable across the house and anywhere I am located out of the house. That lead me to plex.I have been using it exclusively for movies for about 2 months. I am about to use SageTV as a backend to record and get tv into plex thanks to the great agent available on these forums. I am using roku xs to stream movies throughout the house. It gives me netflix/amazon instant, vudu and plex all on one box. Considering a googletv for another room with plex client. I also use my samsung built in plex app on one tv without any issue at all.

Anyways any questions people have about it or where to start happy to help as always

Why did I chose plex?

1. Allows me to have all my media managed for local or remote playback in one setting.
2. resume from any device/streamer/tv/computer from where movie was last left off
3. Allows me to synch content to my idevices with plexpass (transcode and store the movies locally)
4. Cheap roku xs clients that seam to work great where hd audio isn't needed

cheers,

I recently converted my main client to PLEX.... I still have the sage TV client installed... So I setup eventghost to run SageTVClient when I close Plex and vice versa. I do not run the scanner as I found it easier to rename the files upon completion of recording. This eliminates the over head of needing to make HTTP commands to jetty server.

I also separate my Sports shows using SJQ.

I stream to my Nexus 7 using the Plex android application and it works great. I also use the Nexus as a Plex remote to control any Instance of Plex.

PS the only thing I miss is comskip.

How do you schedule recordings or if you want to watch live TV (sports)? Do you still go into Sage for the EPG?

I just close Plex on my client and SageTV starts up. Or I use my Android tablet to schedule recordings through chrome. I do not watch livetv .... only sports on occasion.

Pretty much sums up all the reasons why I've been using Plex for quite awhile now Signed up for PlexPass the day it was announced... just waiting for the part where my sister in Australia can use the web client for free to access the content on my Plex server.

I have an OTA tuner hooked directly to tv in rare cases that I need live.

Why can't she now not available in australia? I love the web streaming and being able to share collections is truly great!

I want her to have a separate account and I think that would mean paying for PlexPass for her... but I haven't checked into it lately so this may have changed?

For awhile, the web client was PlexPass users only but that's no longer the case and I have confirmed that simple (free) myPlex account is all that is needed to access shared content over the web, yay! And thanks!

Possibly, if they're non-protected but I will test later today.

Totally: to android, iOS, Roku (I've set up a friend this way, Roku 2 XS), or just through a web browser.

I haven't looked at Plex in a long while and I'm 99% sure I know the answer to this, but there still isn't a live TV / PVR solution that integrates ATSC tuners like the HDHomerun in to the Plex ecosystem is there? The "everything in one interface" is one of the main reasons I'm sticking with Sage and evaluating the Mediaportal TV Server / XBMC on Raspberry Pi Client as my next setup

That's correct. I use the SageTV webserver to schedule recordings or a PC client on my desktop...

Hey, long time no....readying things you type?

Anyway, I really like plex, but my home network doesn't like to let my mobile devices connect. I do like all the new stuff they've added. I guess I just need to sign up for plexpass. I wonder if they still have the lifetime subscription option?

I should think that could be resolved

As of today, yes (though I'm having problems reaching the site just now...)

I don't convert my SageTV recordings at all (HD-PVR) but I no longer record in 1080i (for channels when it was available). I find that 720p gives me the best performance on my LAN and remotely.

720p/H.264/mkv seems to work well (for ripped content) streaming remotely for my iOS devices and for the Roku 2 XS (both on the LAN and remotely).

hulu / espn / etc plugins?

For those of you running plex with a native Mac or Windows server: How good is the quality of the "webkit" (flash/silverlight) plugins? Things like Hulu or ESPN3 when displayed via a Roku? Since I use linux, I have to setup a windows plex server in a VM to get flash based plugins to work.

I was hoping for a better experience than Playon provides, but in brief tinkering with a Plex server running in a Win7 VM, they seem to be worse than Playon. Eg, take longer to start, and have worse quality. I'm wondering if it would suck even on a native Windows server & I should cut my losses, or if I just need to do some more VM tuning. BTW, I"m giving the VM 2 cores on a fast Sandy-Bridge based Xeon.

Thanks,

Drew

If you're using a Roku, why not just use the Roku Hulu+ app/channel?

(I don't use any Flash based content/plugins via Plex myself)
