Removing the "Change User" fixed my client machine. I will test on my server/client later tonight to see if that affects my ability to get into the default UI for detailed settings...

When you delete the directory, it should start to add items as it loads fanart (since it will be rescaling it). It may be that you shouldn't have removed the directory, but rather deleted the sub directory contents. you can try to reboot the server and see if that re-creates it.
This is on a SageTV phoenix client. I have since restored the directory and subdirectory structure but the phoenix client still is *NOT* caching anything.

How can I fix?

My evidence that it is not caching is that all the subdirectories remain empty...

even after stop/restart of the client.

help...

Does the SageTV process have access to write to that directory. Is Windows virtual filestore (or whatever it's called on windows), mapping the files to another location?

Do you see any errors in the phoenix.log when you remove the folder and then start to use phoenix (which will build up the cache).

You are correct - it stuck them here:

\\hdmediacenter8\c$\Users\HDMCE\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\userdata

And the directory is populated.

Attaching log file - as there are some meta data errors at the end ... please take a look and let me know how to handle those.

Also, since I have upgraded to the latest phoenix everytime I first go to a menu (i.e. "All Recorded TV") I get the spinning circle for a couple seconds. That did not happen before. How do I investigate that?

Based on the logs... it's looks like it's having issues reading images from the NAS drive. Putting Fanart on the network will definately have a negative impact on performance.

been running it in this configuration for years... the I/O on the NAS is > 100MB/s sustained both read and write.

It is unlikely that is the issue... and note how it is only occurring on that one item not on a lot of items (which would happen if it is a general problem)

What is interesting about that is I updated the meta data for that movie Bella using the BMT web interface just the other day (previously it wasnt successfully retrieving meta data automatically).

Also note these warning in the log on meta data format:

Also, do you think there is any real advantage to using a central fanart store for real sagetv clients (non-extenders)? Typically the the client has plenty of storage and computer power... certainly a central location saves pulling the duplicate meta data from the internet - but it also causes some unnecessary delay pulling it off the central store... thinking the delay is the worse of the two evils.

How often does the meta data directory get refreshed? Is there any real overhead to pulling the meta data to the client directly?

Those warning messages are pretty harmless. Basically a phoenix view for Movies will try to show the Title (Year), but if the "movie" doesn't have a year, then it will ignore the title mask and just show the Title.

As for fanart... the oppinions vary. There are people that are loading the entire fanart cache into memory to get performance.

I can't really say, since for myself, I use extenders, so I only have fanart on the server. But for clients, it will cache all fanart eventually (or all at once if you run the fanart scaling option inside Phoenix). once it is cached, then you should be fine, since it will be local.
