How Sage plays back media files

Does anyone know how the Sage Client retrieves media files? Does the client play the file directly from the network share or is the Sage server in the middle? Hope that makes sense.

The Client gets the details including file location from the Server ... then it plays the file directly if using UNC paths or mapped drives. If not using UNC paths it will stream the file to the client.
