Client and Extender Freezing Frequently During Playback
Hello all, I am having a strange issue and wondered if anyone could lend some insight. Lately (for the last 3 or 4 weeks), I have been having frequent playback freezes on both my HD300 extender and my Windows Client. When watching a show, the playback will just freeze. Sometimes you can press the stop button on the remote and it will kick you back to the menu. Other (most) of the time, I have to reboot the extender or restart the SageTV software on the client. There doesn't seem to be a particular pattern to the freezing, but it happens very consistently within the first hour of watching a show. This behavior is strange because I have not changed much on my setup other than the usual updating of plugins. Also strange is the server/Sage service does NOT have to be restarted on the server, though reconnection to the server after a freeze will sometimes take more time than usual. Last night I was watching the baseball game on my Windows client and noticed the first freeze at 10:07pm (22:07). After watching the frozen frame for about 1 minute, I restarted the Sage Client application. Here is the SERVER log from about one minute before to a couple of minutes after the freeze. (Would a client log also be helpful?):

If it is affecting both playback devices, it is most likely one of two things. Either you have a failing harddrive, or you have a network issue.

Fuzzy, given that it is a socket write that is failing, it appears that you have a network issue as the socket is closing unexpectedly when it expects the socket to still be open.
Try leaving a ping on your server running to the client. output the info to a log file so that you can look at the ping times when it occurs, that's if you can recreate it. |

Fuzzy and Oddity, thanks for the replies. I was originally thinking it may be a networking issue, but hadn't thought of the hard drive issue. Though I have my recordings going to two different physical drives so it is kind of odd that both hard drives would be going bad at the same time. So that kind of leads me back to the networking side. Does anyone know of a good network monitor/logging software? I don't need anything complicated, just something I can run on the server to see network events that coincide with the freezups. I could also do the ping -t as Oddity suggested, but I am not sure how to write that to a log. My server has another Ethernet adapter in it so I could try that for a few days as well to see if the problem persists. Thanks for any additional suggestions.

Here is the contents of a batch file that I use to test connections. Just create a folder named "ping" to store the log file.
You could also just append the ">> c:\ping\pingfromA2B.txt" to your ping command to create the log file. echo Pinging from Point A to Point B >> f:\public\chrisd\ping\pingfrommain.txt date /T >> c:\ping\pingfromA2B.txt time /T >> c:\ping\pingfromA2B.txt ping -t -l 1024 -w 5000 172.20.5.12 >> c:\ping\pingfromA2B.txt exit |

Olias, thanks for the info. Well, I tried the other Ethernet adapter in my server (completely separate adapter, not part of a dual gigabit or anything) and I still got a freeze after about 45 minutes in. I suppose it still could be a networking issue (like my router port), but I now have my doubts since I am still able to remote desktop into the server after/during a freeze (though it seems slightly less responsive). Here is the log from around the time of the freeze tonight:

Well, here is a little more info. We managed to watch an entire full length film last night without a freeze (the movie is on a drive on the server, not another network source). Also, my kids watched a half hour show this morning without a freeze. I ran a stock Windows chkdsk on my C: drive and my 2 recording drives and all seemed good. It found a couple of minor errors on the C and F drive, but it didn't look like anything to cause alarm since it was able to fix all errors. So I am beginning to narrow it down to (but am not 100% sure yet) playback freezes occurring while another show is recording (be it the one I am watching or a different show). Could it be something related to the tuners? I am not getting an error in Sage, but it still makes me wonder. I have comskip running during recording as well, but I don't think that is it since I have had it freeze during shows that I am not running comskip on. Any other ideas on what to check? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You're not alone
To the top - I too am experiencing random freeze, and Sage crashing behavior. Additionally, I have always experienced a short freeze, then the video and audio playing very fast between programs - even if the programs are on the same channel. Equipment is an HP m1270n with internal 250Gb SATA, external western digital MyBook 500Gb via USB 2.0, (3x) 1Gb sticks of Corsair memory, tuner is VistaView Saber DA-1N1
Any advice is most appreciated. Oh, system is intel P4 running windows XP sp3. We use this machine as dedicated Sage box, only additional software running is Microsoft Security Essentials. Cory G. Maryland |

Suggestion, copy one of the files that is freezing to a different machine. Run the file thru VLC. Check the location of the freeze. If it's OK, then it's not the recorded files, but playback only. That would check the drive and recording side of things.
Also, if you have a copy of VideoRedo, run the file thru it. SageTV playback is one of the most robust there is, but if the file has enough bad data, even it can't handle it.
