Frame per rate drops after updating to Gemstone
I been using Diamond since the day it was release with no problems then a couple of days ago I updated to Gemstone.
I notice my frame rate on my playback seem to be dropping after awhile on my HD300. It would start playback fine then frame rate start going down to a certain point and stay there until I restart the server. Example normal fps would be like 32 or something then it seem to drop down to about 25 fps and stay at 25 fps until I restart sagetv It may not be the Gemstone and something with to do with SageTV but strange that problem appears right after updating to Gemstone. I thought about re-installing Sagetv but would avoid it if possible and try to fix it. Any idea? Something to do with SageTV alone or gemstone broke something during the update? Thank you Bill

How do you measure framerate on your HD300?

There isn't (shouldnt be) any difference between the playback code in Diamond and the Playback code in Gemstone.
There may be slightly more memory usage per extender with Gemstone on the server java heap. I have found the UI on my hd300 using Gemstone a lot more responsive than Diamond using the new STV install method. Have you tried powering off and on the extender? Reboot the server? |

Same issue
I had the same issue but on the server (I have no extenders). Thought it was just my setup. I restored my old phoenix setup and it did the same thing for about an hour. Now it's fine. I'll try again and give it some time. I was thinking there must be a background process causing it.

Gemstone shouldn't be running anything in the background unless it is busy caching Fanart locally and that has to happen sometime to create the initial cache. Either you pre cache or you let the files cache as they are accessed which would case the system to work a bit but once that is all done it shouldn't cause anything to slow let alone slow playback. I run comskip live on my files and precache my Fanart and have never noticed a payback slowdown on the server, extender or client.
Please provide more details about your issue, systems, network when posting issues. Me too's are really hard to trouble shoot |

Okay I removed all plugins from SageTV leaving only Google Weather cuz it complains and want to install it. So SageTV is back to stock.
SageTV FPS look good now, but all the recordings made after the Gemstone update is still showing poor FPS. I am not saying it Gemstone but it seem strange it occurred after Gemstone update. So I am gonna keep SageTV at stock for a couple of hours and see what happens if the poor FPS comes back then I will know it not the Gemstone. Bill

With my eyes
I am a technician for a video phone company so I know when there a poor framerate or if the FPS isn't at normal speed. It just pretty obvious when they pan the camera in a circle then you can see it or slide the camera down the track on a TV show .. Bill

My max java heap is set at 1024, right now I removed all the plugins to see if it Gemstone or the SageTV itself then if problem is gone then I will install Gemstone first. But strangely that all my recordings after Gemstone update is effected. Bill

Beta firmware on the HD300.
Like I said Gemstone is basically Diamond v4 and there isn't changed code wise that should have any effect on playback rates. There is an issue with some Fanart API calls but it shouldn't be causing our frame rate to fluctuate... Is it all the time? Network related maybe??? Not sure what to suggest but keep us updated if you can pinpoint something causing it. J |

Seem that there an issue with SageTV itself not the Gemstone.
The FPS still drop after awhile even with all the plugins removed. But strange that this happened after I update Diamond to Gemstone. Look like I will need to go do a fresh install of SageTV then try it and see that FPS problem goes away then install Gemstone. Thank you for all your inputs! Bill

I think i found my problem to the poor FPS
My SageTV was switched to and set at 1080p/24 and I always had it set at 1080p/60. I don't know how or why did it switch to 1080p/24 during the Diamond update to Gemstone or if I pressed some type of button on remote by accident if there a such button on the HD300 remote that would change the setting to 1080p/24 Once I switch back to 1080p/60 FPS was back up normal again so I reinstall Gemstone and all seem to be working good but the movie fanart banner are not showing up still in the recorded listing. Movie banner never shows up in Diamond for me so it that still the same in Gemstone? Thank you Bill

Only TV has banners. Movie fanart is only posters and backgrounds so if you have a banner based flow or TV view the banner for movies will always just be text.

I am still having this issue but I managed to narrow it down.
It seem after I update to Gemstone, during the SageTV nightly reboot my output resolution changes from 1080p/60 dropping down to 1080p/24. And each morning I have to switch it back up to 1080p/60. Does Gemstone have anything to do with output resolution? If not then I probably have to re-install SageTV server again Bill

Not that I can think of.
The setting in the extender properties file shouldn't be affected by anything we have done. J |

Agreed... gemstone does nothing to adjust output resolution.
