iPad Streaming

I was using splashtop and was having trouble with the sound and quality (you have to watch the mute button on the side of the iPad, it will mute the remote system when you connect). Anyway, I started using avstreamerhd and thought it worked much better:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avstr...521122624?mt=8

If anyone is streaming to an iPad I would be curious if people are getting better results from this program. Too bad there was never a client for iOS...

Thanks,

Doug

I use Splashtop and it works fine for me, although I have the mute button set to orientation lock.

Why don't setup the mobile webserver plugin? It includes built in streaming.

I also use Splashtop to access the server, but the mobile streaming is much better in low/variable bandwidth settings

I've never had much luck getting that to work with my hdpvr recordings...

Indeed, ffmpeg on which the sagetranscoder is based doesn't like the 1080i recordings from the HD-PVR...

I've been toying with the idea off and on to switching the output of my cable box to fixed 720p -- do you think/know if transcoding would work better generally in that case?

I used 720p lock on my cable box and never ran into any issues.

And that was recording with an HDPVR as well?

I have used AirVideo on the iPad and while it generally works OK it struggles when you try to skip ahead on HD recordings, particularly from the HD-PVR. The other problem is that it takes a while to browse your TV folder if you have hundreds of recordings, which I do.

I think this ffmpeg issue is also why PlaceShifter didn't work well for HD-PVR 1080i recordings, at least it didn't the last time I tried.

And I also have had issues with the mobile webserver plugin and TiSageTV - again this is likely the ffmpeg issue that Fonceur mentioned.

Similar issues with Airvideo and HD-PVR files

It does struggle if you try to skip ahead.

I just convert the files using Handbrake. I wrote a batch file that runs overnight, that reaches across my network to the recording machine, copies the file(s), runs them through VideoRedo to strip out all the commericials, then encodes them to iPad format. Takes about 2 hours to encode a 2 hour show. Great quality and works perfectly on the iPad, and the same file is also perfect on a Blackberry Playbook.

Could you detail how you script VideoRedo to do this. I have tried before on a trial, but their trial expired before I got a chance to nail it down.

Here you go. For each .ts file in a directory, this batch file will run the program through Ad-Scan feature of VideoRedo(h264). The resulting file will be TheOriginalFileName-B.ts . Then it will call Handbrake with that filename to encode to iPad format TheOriginalFileName.m4v . Your program install paths may vary.

:: Calls Handbrake CLI encodes all ts files in current directory. Using presets for IPad (AppleTV). New files maintain same file name with new extension.
for %%i in (*.ts) do (
cscript //nologo "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoReDoTVSuite4\AdScan.vbs" "%CD%"\"%%i" "%CD%"\"%%~ni.VPrj"
@echo Ad-Scan Detect Done
cscript //nologo "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoReDoTVSuite4\vp.vbs" "%CD%"\"%%~ni.VPrj" "%CD%"\"%%~ni-B.ts" /t4 /e
@echo Ad-Scan Write Done
"c:\Program Files (x86)\HandBrake\HandBrakeCLI.exe" -i "%%~ni-B.ts" -t 1 -c 1 -o "%%~ni.m4v" -f mp4 -4 -X 960 --loose-anamorphic -e x264 -q 20 -a 1,1 -E faac,ac3 -6 dpl2,auto -R 48 -B 160,auto -D 0.0,0.0 --markers="%%~ni.csv"-x cabac=0:ref=2:me=umh:b-adapt=2:weightb=0:trellis=0:weightp=0 -v 1

Yup - before I migrated to the Ceton.

However, I also had the FF/RW issues so re-encoding might be worth the effort if you are a heavy user.

We usually just use it when at the lake, and my wife wants to fall asleep to tv sounds.

Yeah, I've made a couple of 720p recordings but haven't had a chance to try them out. I don't need alot wrt ff/rw and really don't want to go down the transcoding route if I can avoid it...

Thanks for the followup!

If you have VideoRedo (h264), you can use the batch file above and just leave out the Handbrake encoding step. That will quickly accomplish removing all commercials pretty reliably. Then I suspect your FF/RW needs may become more manageable.
