HDPVR Reinstall Problem
My setup was running fine until one day I noticed system error messages that my HDPVR was not recording. Did some troubleshooting and found out that the HDPVR was no longer recognized by my XP Sage server. Cycled power, swapped usb cables, removed & reinstalled HDPVR driver....No Joy. Looked like my HDPVR was dead. Figured it was 4 yrs old and died of heat exhaustion. Bummer, but ordered a new HDPVR.
When new HDPVR arrived I unplugged cables from old device and installed new device. Double bummer...the HDPVR installed (checked drivers and all ok), Sage recognizes the HDPVR and allows me to add it as a source. But when I try to setup HDPVR as a source it will not "turn on" to process the signal. The blue light by the power switch is on but the red led that comes on when HDPVR is operating never comes on. Consequently, I get no video or audio from a box that Sage can't/won't turn on. Poked around on Hauppauge web site and did their basic troubleshooting. No joy. Found this thread http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44511 and figured what the heck...it ain't working now let's follow the whole reinstall procedure. Wiped drivers and unistalled Sage...did all the steps. But I'm back where I was: sage sees the HDPVR but will not turn it on. What am I missing? Thoughts on troubleshooting? Thanks.

Are you using the new power supply, or did you just try to use the old one? That's usually what fails on these things.
If so, you might find that the old one still works, you'll just have to replace the power supply, which is about $10. Or free, if you have a compatable one around the house. |

I'm using the new power supply on the new HDPVR.

Next step would be to install the software from the CD, and see if it will record using its own software. That will narrow down the issue to the HDPVR or Sage.

Good point. And one I forgot to mention. When I use the hauppauge scheduler it will turn on the red HDPVR LED to indicate that it is recording. Stopping the scheduler and flipping back to sage brings no joy.
Other details: using sage v7.1.9.256. Drivers tested 1.5.7.0 (the one before things went bad) 1.6.29277 ( from the disk) 1.7.1.30059 (from hauppauge website), using F2 HDPVR. Again, sage sees the HDPVR and device manager says it is working properly. I feel like I have made a silly setting somewhere that prevents sage from turning on the HDPVR but not sure what or where that might be. Appreciate the continued help.

So I'm hoping the embarrassment of writing this post will cause me to be more diligent in the future. I had a little extra time today and decided to start from square one on the install. Checking all my cables revealed that I had the output of my stb feeding into the output of the HDPVR. Moved the component cables from the stb to the input on the HDPVR and viola! HDPVR and sage work just fine together. Ugh.

Dont feel bad. Ive done it too, when unhooking everything to vacuum it out and hooking it back up.
Then there is trying to remember which USB jack it was plugged into.... Glad you got it working.

Quick question....Did you actually try using the new power supply with the old (supposedly dead) HD-PVR? If not, I would recommend doing that. I had the exact problem you mentioned in your post and all it took to resolve it was a new power supply. |

I did try the new power supply with the old HDPVR. Unfortunately, that was with the composite audio/video feeds going the wrong RCA outs. Once I got the new HDPVR working I didn't hold on to the old HDPVR. I thought about it, but since the STB only has one set of output RCA jacks and I thoght it was bad, I tossed the old HDPVR.
But maybe this thread will someone else save some $$$ by pointing them toward the power supply and not HDPVR itself.
