To invest more $$ or not, that is the question

Having grown weary of the increasing number Of shows I'm watching in SD instead of HD. I was THAT close to pulling the trigger on an hdHomerun to add to my 2 hd pars when a reality check hit me in the guts. Sage TV is an end of life product... So should I move on rather than add on?

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on how much life is left in Sage. I like what I have (most of the time) and really don't want to start over yet agan.

I have decided not to spend any more on my Sage setup - at least until we find out something about it's future from the Google overlords but I already am 100% HD and have spare extenders.

If that wasn't the case I would at least consider it but I think I would probably wait 'till the end of the year and see about moving to the upcoming SaGoogleTV.

Not much help I'm afraid but it really depends on how much you want HD now vs. your budget.

I plan to use SageTV until something better comes along... which is probably a few years away at least.

I faced this question a couple months ago... I decided my HD-PVR was dying and I needed a replacement. In the end I decided to go ahead and get a DCR-2650 cablecard tuner for ~$100. It was a relatively inexpensive upgrade, and if I'm forced away from Sage for some reason (like if my provider starts marking everything copyonce) then it is still supported by Win MCE and the Ceton Echo/Q which are two of the alternatives I'd probably end up switching to.

There still is nothing that comes close to competing with Sage IMHO. Of course you cannot expand a system with any device that requires licenses (new servers, etc). But if what you have is working, then I see no reason NOT to get a HDHR to access the HD recordings that you desire.

The reality is that even if you switch to another computer based DVR system, you can likely use the HDHR device anyway. The only time you would be out of luck is if you decide to move to your content provider's DVR system.

My opinion is 100% yes. reason being is that for me no matter what the next solution is, it will involve some sort of home solution be it MythTV, NextPVR, or "Something really cool i don't even know about!"

If you plan on maying little to nothing for tv in the future it will be worth it to expand now IMHO.

Too bad, you missed a great deal last week on a refurb HDHR3, they were selling for $65 shipped! It's hard to go wrong at that price...

I just got XBMC with mediaportal as the pvr backend working and it is pretty nice. No sagetv of course, but a good alternative that supports all our tuners (with the exception of the cablecard tuners). So all my investment will still work.

Between CableCARD and the extenders working so well, I have no doubt that I'll continue to expand my SageTV footprint. Looking at buying a house, which will mean more TVs so please mail any extra extenders my direction please!

With your encouraging words, I'll most likely press on with an hdromerun. I still worry that the EPG might go away but there seems to be some assurances there plus alternatives.

EPG shouldn't be a worry. Slugger has a very good EPG plugin which would work even if/when Sage turned off their EPG service.

So how does the plugin hosting thing work? I hadn't thought about losing the forums and plugin hosting. Does anyone know the future for these? I'll do a little searching

I think someone actually already built a backup plugin server that they could turn on and we could point Sage to if need be. They were just copying everything over from the existing and creating a clone. Too lazy to find the thread....

As long as Narflex continues to use SageTV in his own home, I'm guessing nothings going to be cut off... and if he ever DOES switch from sage, it'll be to something he has made, and will likely be available to us...

I think as long as you have working HD200/300 Extenders, there's nothing wrong with investing in more tuners. I added a HDHR Prime after the google acquisition, and it was well worth it.

I don't see any reason to not add as many HD-PVRs as sources you have. OTA tuners can also be found pretty cheaply. If you already have extenders you should be able to get years of use from this setup ...

He's using Google TV of course.

Pretty sure he's still using SageTV... seeing as how he's posted pictures of his cat with his HD-300 remote, and just got a personalized plate that says SageTV7 (not 8, unfortunately).

Hey, I resent that! You left out the beauty of the HD100...They have PlaceShifter licenses so you can migrate them to a PC. So, as long a you have HD100's who cares if they are working! There is always an upgrade path.

Placeshifter is no replacement... I'd rather run an neverending trial of the full client than placeshifter.
