Window 7 64 bit installed

Installed windows 7 64 bit last month on my sage server. The OS is running on a 40 Gig SSD. Anyone have any ideal on how to reduce my installed size. I have already moved the virtual memory to one of my recording drives. I have only about 4 Gig left after installing sagetv, mymovies, and squeezebox.

Don't think that would be a good idea for the OS.

I supposed the proper first question is what's using all the space? Use something like windirstat to figure it out, if you haven't done that already. That usually gets you pointed it the right direction. My guess is that you'll have some hard decisions to make with regard to what programs you actually want to benefit from the SSD.

I will say that this exact issue is why I chose not to purchase a cost-effective, low capacity SSD and instead waited until I had enough money for at least a 120GB. My server will be getting a 240GB, but I'll be doing much more than running SageTV and wanted some room to grow.

if you have sleep/hibernation enabled it could be C:/hiberfill.sys (or something similar)... the file is hidden and a protected os file so it won't show up in windows explorer by default.. The file is usually at least the size of your ram.

The computer whole existence is to operate Sagtv server. 40 gig was sufficient when I was operating windows xp; did not discover the problem with windows 7 until after the install. The system run find, I just wanted to have at least 10 Gig free. Not a big problem, just wondering what windows 7 could live without.

Need to keep sleep/hibernation. That is the sweetest thing to happen to my sage system. When my last client logs off, the server sleeps. The minute a client powers up, the server wakes up. I could never get xp to do this without channel changing issues. I can wake the server over the internet, which I couldn't accomplish with XP with all the same hardware.

There are prolly some Windows features you could deactivate. In Control Panel under Programs.

FWIW, my SageTV Server is on a 32GB SSD. With a 4GB pagefile, I still have about 4GB free.

I think I found the culprit. A file in bracket {3GH644FD-21AF-11D1-B7FF-4091267D2581} which is 7 GIG in size just sitting in the windows directory. The last date modified was 12/09/2011. Will create an image backup, delete the file, reboot, and see what happens. Windows just identifies it as file.

If you've been installing hotfixes or service packs then there will be restore points stored somewhere. Also copies of the files updated and probably the hotfixes themselves as well!

I have 2 gamining rigs that have windows 7 64bit after a fresh install used around 17gig.

-Turn off disk defrag.
-Turn off system restore
-Move vm to other drive and disable it on ssd (page file)

*wiping a drive with vm on it will results in drive in use error cannot perform this function. Have to move vm to another drive before wiping. Some programs require a page file, setting a machine without it may cause a crash if ram is full. Both gaming rigs have 8gb ram so I set it to 2 GB on mechanical drive.

-turn off indexing
-Delete all windows updates off the temp file
-from command prompt powercfg -h off disables hibernate on that drive, can set hibernation to other drives if desired.
-move bookmarks, browsing history, etc to another drive

Regarding the pagefile / swap file on an SSD, you should leave it there if you have the space:

In looking at telemetry data from thousands of traces and focusing on pagefile reads and writes, we find that.. there are few files better than the pagefile to place on an SSD.

I ran WinNT OS drive for years that way with no problems. Some files/directories were not compressed so had to dual install another version to compress them. The page file/hiber file will not be compressed no matter what - and probably shouldn't be!
