Remote Management

I have a remote management question:
I'm switching back from WHS/extender combo, to Win7/no extender (lots of reasons, don't want to bore people). I would like to be able to VNC into the Win7 machine without disrupting Sage functionality on the TV. How can I do this?

First, you will need to create 2 users on each Windows 7 PC (one that automatically logs-in and starts-up Sage on the display, one that will be used just for Remote Desktop.)

Next you need to enable Concurrent Sessions. This allows 2 users to be logged in at once. Details are available here: http://www.windows7hacker.com/index....top-windows-7/

Next, Remote Desktop into the target PC with the user created for remote desktop access.

Having given all these details, I have to admit that I mostly just use LogMeIn.com now. It's easy and accessible from any browser or iOS/Android device. I'm not sure if it can take advantage of concurrent sessions or not; I haven't tried.

Depending on settings vnc won't change a thing on your desktop if you don't want it to. Other than that the above is the way to do it. Ultravnc is free and works on all platforms. 64bit and 32bit.

Ahh, concurrent sessions. That's what I'm looking for. I'll try it with logmein and see if that works. Thanks guys.

What version of Win7 are you using? There is a hacka t Missing Remote that enables concurrent sessions in Win7 and it also seems to work to enable Remote Desktop in Win Home Premium.

One thing I've noticed when I'm running concurrent RDP sessions: Java swing applications do not work properly on the 2nd session. So the SageTVServiceControl app doesn't function for instance. Might just be a setting that I need to change because my headless servers work fine with RDP sessions. But the living room server that has a working (fully logged in desktop) will not work for Java swing apps on the RDP session from my laptop.

This inspired me to find a solution.

If you add this to the SageTVServiceControl link that you launch it from on the RDP session it works fine:
-J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=false

So my link became:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV\SageTVServiceControl.exe" -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=false

You could try running SageTV on the extended desktop (i.e. 2nd display), which would free the primary desktop for VNC.
